Please help, this is my first time
posting. My 16 yr. old formerly healthy
daughter normally pooped twice a day. Her
b.m.'s started to change over a one month
period of time and she became constipated.
Several visits to the pediatrician
finally put us in touch with a specialist.
We took her to the Gastro and he
prescribed over several weeks miralax and
amitiza for abdominal pain. The pain is
right above the belly button and moves in
a circular motion. He performed cat scan,
and saw that she was filled with a lot of
poop. He said she needed to do a colon
prep to clean her out like she was having
a colonoscopy. We did this and she felt
better for a few days and then the
constipation started again. He then put
her on bentyl for abdomen spasms, no help
at all. She also vomited in the a.m.
before school a few times and continued to
have abdominal pain.
After a month of on off pain in the
abdomen and constipation she began getting
severe bloating and abdominal pain that
would NOT STOP. It was constant to the
point that she couldn't sleep. We went to
the E.R. twice and each time they sent us
home with go lightly to clean her out.
After two weeks of more pain she was
hospitalized for severe constipation and
had a 24hr drip which they put in her nose
and down into her stomach. After several
enemas she was clean.
She came home from the hospital and was
very weak and could hardly walk. Doctor
was very surprised, said she should feel
like a million bucks. Went for strep
test, mono test, flu test, all negative.
Pain in abdomen got worse and continued to
be constant.
Bowel Movements are extremely painful.
She is screaming and crying because of the
pain. She will struggle to have a b.m.
and only a small amount comes out. After
being home for a week she suddenly got a
sharp pain in her rectum which only got
worse over the next two days and persisted
for almost a month. The pain would come
about 30 times a day to the point that she
was screaming. Her anus is extremely
soar. We had her checked for roids and
fissures with a sigmoidoscopy and they
didn't see anything. She is now using
lidocane after each b.m. and the pain is
horrible. She can't even stand the water
from the shower to fall down her back onto
her anus because she is so sensitive. To
put the lidocane on is a nightmare.
So far she has had colonoscopy, no
colitis, no chron's , two upper
endoscopies, stomach empty test,
sigmoidoscopy, Cat scan, ultra-sound of
pelvis, MRI of pelvis, MRI of lumbar,
thoracic , cervical spine, all negative.
Her brain MRI shows some white matter
which we'll find out more about this week.
She had the Brain MRI because she has
Obsessive Compulsive disorder which has
been stable for the last four years. The
neurologist diagnosed her with sustained
clonus a briskness of the reflexes in her
body so he wants to look further at her
central nervous system. She also had a
anal manometry test which showed some
problem with the reflex to push out the
poop. They are recommending bio-feedback
for this. They told us because her colon
got so stretched out she will have to
continue to take miralax 3-4 times a day
to help her eliminate. She does not have
the feeling to push out the b.m..
We have tried every over the counter drug
for pain and nothing works. The only
relief she gets is from the vicadin the
Doctor prescribed and even that hardly
works. She hates taking it because she is
very woozy on it and doesn't like how her
breathing feels.
Right now her days are spent just managing
the pain and waiting for the horrible
b.m.. The doctors want her to have at
least two b.m.'s a day.
She has always had a healthy diet. We
took her to a wellness Doctor and she put
her on a 30 day yeast cleanse and wants us
to follow a celiac diet. She has never
had any food allergies, always been able
to tolerate any foods.
The past two days we did another cleanse
and she is still bloated and in constant
pain. Her stomach is very distended and
hard. She needs to have the heating pad
on to give her a little relief. Almost
all of the day is either spent in bed or
on the couch. It hurts to walk. She is
sooooo frustrated and very sad. We're
trying real hard to keep her up and
hopeful that we'll find out what's going
on.
Please help if you have any guidance. I
can't seem to find anyone with the
sensitivity in the rectum that is so
severe. Does anyone have this or ever
experienced it? It's almost as if she is
burned.
I'm waiting to see if we can get a
sitzmark test for the small bowel and
possibly drink the liquid die and see how
it moves through the digestive system.
Sorry this is so long, any help would be a
blessing. Thank you.

I will copy this over to the digestive and
bowel disorders section so that you can
get more help there.
I am very sorry your daughter is going
through this. This is just a hunch of
mine, but have they taken any x-rays to
make sure that everything is in the right
position, that there are no small kinks in
her system? Did she fall or was she in an
accident or does she play a lot of contact
sports (even basketball where she might
fall?)
This MIGHT be her problem: she has a
mechanical problem which might be fixed by
about 6 months of treatments by a
chiropractor. I know you mentioned the
fact that she seems to lack the BM
reflexes, but I think at this point,
that's a no-brainer because she doesn't
want to do something that puts her in
voluntary pain, especially after it's been
so on-going.
I believe this is caused by something more
sudden like a physical trauma, rather than
a nervous disorder, and I do not think
that she is unable to recover from this.
It got really bad over the course of a
month: well that is about how long it
would take for things to build up in her
system and really start to hurt if there
was something out of place, not matter how
much or little out of place it might be.
I hope that makes sense, and I hope your
daughter gets all the help she needs to
feeling herself again. Good luck

Thank you for your suggestions. My
husband has been saying we need to take
her to a chiropractor. That is on my to
do list.
The only x-ray she had was of her chest
and abdomen to see if she was filled with
poop and the MRI's I mentioned in my first
post.
What areas would you suggest she get
x-rays?
She does not play any contact sports and
has not had any injury or fall. After
helping her out of the bath today we both
noticed the area around her tail bone
looks swollen, its not too big but
noticeable. I'll have to follow up with
the Doctor about that.
Thanks for your help.

The area around her tail bone being
swollen is most likely just another result
of the constipation. The average person
puts excess there, we just don't even
notice it because it is so gradual. Since
you already had the MRIs and x-rays of her
abdominals, perhaps you could use the same
ones to look at the placement of her
organs. There is a specific area which
each part part has to be. There is a
certain margin in which each needs to stay
in place to function properly, however,
there might just be a slight problem with
placement that could throw things off,
even if it still is in the right general
area. You can have the pictures sent over
the the chiropractor for evaluation as
well.
