Low Potassium & Sodium, Swelling & High BP Posted: 03-05-08 14:21pm
My mother is 64 (I think; she doesn't tell
anyone her age). In Nov 07' she started
having problems with swelling in abdomen,
hands, feet, legs and her blood pressure
was high for the first time. She went to
the doctor (or hospital; I am not sure)
and they told her that her potassium and
sodium were very low and they put her on a
blood pressure medicine and several other
prescriptions to help alleviate the
swelling and increase her potassium and
sodium levels. My father has taken her to
every kind of specialist there is over the
course of the last four months.
I have asked him to convey to the doctors
what her daily routine consist of, which
is the following: 8-10 cups of coffee/day,
2+ PACKS of cigarettes, no exercise (I
mean NONE!), and no exposure to sunlight
(with the exception of summertime). I
think all of this has something to do with
her symptoms. Do you have any idea of what
could be wrong with her?? Please HELP!
Medical Background: Heart Disease runs in
her family - two of her siblings died from
massive heart attacks; Cancer - her mother
died of what was thought to have started
as brain cancer, but had spread all over
by the time they discovered it and she
lived only a few weeks. Her sister had
breast cancer a few years back.
My mother has more than her share of
doctor's visits. She does have an annual
mammogram and GYN Check-Up and she claims
to have what everyone else has had; but
hers is ALWAYS worse. The results do show
high blood pressure, low potassium and
sodium, and she does have swelling, mainly
in her feet now.
DIAGNOSE MY MOTHER......PLEASE!!!

Was your mother checked for her kidneys
(kidney is the main organ that controls
the balance of potassium and sodium)?
Was she suffering from hypertension before
this?
Was she taking diuretics for control of
her blood pressure?
Is she experiencing decreased urine
production?
