Allergic to Psyllium Fiber? Posted: 04-30-08 10:07am
Wondering if anyone here has an allergy to
Psyllium? After the Dr ordered me to
start taking Metamucil daily, I began to
break out in severe hives. I wasnt sure
what was causing it, and never suspected
the fiber. But after a week of suffering
(full body hives) and taking
antihistemines, it dawned on me that the
fiber could be possible, and I stopped it
completely. 1 or 2 days later the hives
were gone.
Anyone else have this experience?

Usually, psyllium is well tolerated, but,
there is no guarantee of strength, purity
or safety of products containing or
claiming to contain psyllium. So, psyllium
can cause allergic reaction, including
rash, itching and shortness of breath. It
can cause a severe anaphylactic reaction,
too.

My wife, (this is her account) has been
getting hives on her face and chest and
arms. Mostly on her mouth and eyes. It is
triggered when she is exposed to sunlight
and has been going on for a couple years.
We just realized that she has been taking
Metamucil with psyllium for the exact same
time period. She discontinued taking
Metamucil a week ago but has not yet gone
out in the sun. She plans on giving her
body a couple more weeks to get it out of
her system before staying out in the sun
to test the theory.
