I am trying to find out if it is possible
to only be allergic to a certain kind of
shrimp. I recently had a very bad
reaction after eating shrimp at a japanese
hibachi restaurant. I have had two
reactions in the past (only at this
restaurant) where I had itching and then
hives. This time, I had intensse itching,
then swelling in my neck, face, throat,
shoulder area and armpits. I went to the
ER and was treated as mentioned above.
The strange thing is that I have eaten
shrimp at home, and on vacation and
haven't had a problem. I was also tested
for shrimp allergy by my doctor (after the
first two mild reactions) and it came back
negative.
Is it possible to only be allergic to
their shrimp or should I be looking for a
possible spice allergy? I have no other
problems with any other food.

Current medical status: allergic reaction
Current medical treatment: I was treated
with benedryl and prednisone. I am not on
either, currently.
Theoretically you could be allergic to a
different strain of shrimp. Those mild
positive reactions on the first two
allergy tests make your case really
confusing. The only way you can find out
if you are allergic only to the
restaurant’s shrimp is to take raw
shrimps from the restaurant and cook them
at home.
