allopurinol and bleeding gums? Posted: 05-17-08 16:17pm
I have been having what the doctor thought
and I was gout attack for a while now. We
never did blood tests because those are
the worst way to diagnose gout. Have to
tap a joint and get the fluid out to know
for sure I was told. Well, I had knee
surgery recently and along with the
pictures of the problems in the knee, the
doctor took pictures of what he said was
ua deposits all over the bones of the
knee. While he was in there, he took blood
for a ua test, here at our hospital they
use an 8.6 mg/dL number as the upper end
of normal, I am at 8.5 mg/dL. The surgeon
did not however, take a sample of a
deposit and have it looked at to identify
it. He gave me allopurinol 100mg was
supposed to take it 1 time a day. However,
after the 3rd dose my gums started to
bleed, stopped taking it and they stopped
bleeding. Nobody here can understand why
the gums started to bleed. The surgeon
told me to stop taking the indomethacin,
as it is too hard on the stomach, he gave
me something else for it. Recently I had
another blood test done, the numbers have
not changed in well over a year. I am a
47-year-old overweight male with IBS as
well, which is treated with Hyoscyamine
.375mg 2 times a day. I guess my questions
are: has anybody else ever heard of gums
bleeding with the use of allopurinol?
Currently, I am not doing anything for the
high levels of uA and have heard that
untreated, gout can kill. Is that true?

I don't think gout can kill Posted: 05-19-08 01:47am
I don't think gout can kill. I have never
heard that. I have heard that circulatory
problems are common for people with
predispositions for gout. Gingivitis is a
common circulatory problem that makes your
gums bleed and you can get heart disease
from periodontal disease.
