No period (amenorrhea) is defined as lack
of menstruation.
If a woman never got her first
menstruation by age 16 years old, that is
called primary amenorrhea. If women had
menstruations in the past but haven’t
had any menstruation for the last 6
months, that is called secondary
menstruation.
PRIMARY amenorrhea can be due to:
1. Chromosome and genetic anomalies that
affect the ovaries - 45%;
2. Brain disorders (usually tumors) –
15%;
3. Physiological reasons – 13%:
Constitutional (late puberty), anorexia,
excessive exercising;
4. Structural anomalies of the uterus
(congenital) – 17%, and
5. Systemic diseases (hypothyroidism,
obesity, celiacia, Chusing syndrome etc.)
– 10%.
SECONDARY amenorrhea can be due to:
1. Pregnancy;
2. Hormonal contraception;
3. Fast increasing or decreasing of the
body weight;
4. Excessive physical or mental stress;
5. Endocrine disorders (hypothyroidism,
hyperprolactinemia, Chusing syndrome,
PCOS…);
6. Ovarian damage caused by medicines or
irradiation;
7. Early menopause;
8. Hypothalamus-pituitary disorders;
9. Uterus injury;
1. Hormonally active ovarian cyst or
tumor, etc.
Therapy depends upon the cause. You may
want to consult your gynecologist for
proper treatment.
