There is no 'right' or 'wrong' way. Do
whatever feels right to you. Just don't
stick unclean or badly textured objects up
there. You don't want to complicate

Dry fingers and fingernails are bad,
because they can cause irritation, cuts,
or both. Lube is good. Water-based is
best, because oils can coat the rectum and
trap bacteria, and because oils eat latex
condoms or gloves for breakfast, but
plain, unscented baby oil, shortening, and
even good ol' Vaseline will probably be OK
(I've never had any coating-related
infection issues, but YMMV.) Avoid the
temptation to use handy things like
shampoo or skin lotion with a lot of
chemical crap in it, and for the love of
all that's good and pure, never jam a huge
