Hi, my partner went the other day to a psychologist because he thought he may have ADD. The psychologist agreed that she thought he had ADD and also OCD.. The problem is that this one session was free through a job agency and we dont know where to go from here because we know he needs some serious help of some kind but cant afford sessions with a psychiatrist. Does a normal GP have the authority to prescribe ADD/OCD medication without referring my partner to a psychiatrist ( because he has had a session with a psychologist ) Please help, what can we do. My partner is slowly giving up on life.......

I'm sorry to hear that your partner is having a rough time. My next door neighbor's son has ADD and I know for a fact that she took him to a regular md. The md prescribed his medication and is monitoring him. As for the ocd, I know that sometimes they treat that with anti-depressants. And a regular md can prescribe anti-depressants.

Both of these disorder can be diagnosed and treated by a gp. My pediatrician diagnosed and treated my son for ADHD.

Probably, yes. But medication is really not the best treatment for OCD. (Or sometimes for ADHD either) Are there any services you can take advantage of through your state? I think it's worth checking in to.
