bacterial vaginosis ?
Posted: 07-03-08 16:42pm

over the past few weeks i've had discolored, obnoxious-smelling discharge which seems to be getting steadily worse. i've gotten yeast infections before, but this time there's no pain or itching, and the discharge isn't just white, it tends to have reddish-brown mixed into it. I had my period about two weeks ago, so I don't think it's any kind of PMS thing.
anyway, i've read about bacterial vaginosis on ehealth, and that it is usually caused by having new or multiple sex partners. I was wondering if this included same-sex partners, or if BV is typically caused by heterosexual sex. My girlfriend and I started having sex about two weeks ago, so maybe I have BV? I don't douche, use scented soaps, etc.

Bacterial vaginosis can have several causes. It may be simply an over growth of the bacteria that is native to the vagina. This is an imbalance in the vaginal environment and can be corrected with treatment. Multiple partners can cause bacterial vaginosis however, I believe they are referring to heterosexual partners. Females can transfer bacteria to each other through the use of sexual toys. This is cross contamination and can be prevented by washing the object between uses.

You need to see a gyn about this. Any foul odor or discolored discharge merits a visit to the doctor.
