Balanitis and possible diabetes Posted: 07-10-08 05:10am
Hi all
I've come to this forum for hopefully some
common sense and a bit of supporrt.
Let's start with the facts: I'm 34, very
overweight and currently suffering from
Thrush. Symptoms are that I feel like I
need a pee all the time - even 2 minutes
after my last pee. The nob of the penis
is (some days good some days not) very red
and there's a small discharge.
I've been to my GP (or his team) 3 times
in 6 weeks and had my urine tested for
glucose (Diabetes) and my blood tested -
kidneys and prosteate. All came back
negative about a month ago. They told me
to apply Canesten to my dick which I've
been doing but the Thrush ain't going
away. Two days ago, another doctor at my
surgery suggested circumcision - I have a
very (very!) generous amount of foreskin -
it can be half an inch longer than the end
of my dick when I'm not erect. I'm not
keen on circumcision - though I would do
it if really necessary. One problem is
that even if I retract the foreskin to
apply the cream - I can't really stop the
foreskin sliding back over the nob to
cover it completely. So I'm not sure how
much good the Canesten's doing. It does
calm things down though.
My wife's checked my nob out too - she
sees it has been red and has a discharge
so I don't disagree with the Thrush
diagnosis.
Could someone talk some sense into me
please? Every time I sit here wondering
whether to have a coffee or whether I can
be bothered to try and have another pee, I
convince myself that at around 9 stone
overweight, it's Thrush coupled with Type
2 diabetes which hasn't been picked up.
Since January I have had my urine tested
for Diabetes around 4 times, I had a blood
test for it in January and I bought myself
a pin prick meter and none of my readings
came back any higher than 5.5 at any time
of day. The _only_ thing that worries me
is in January I had a pin prick test at my
surgery which came back 6.3 but to date
that is the only reading I've ever had
higher than 5.5 - makes me wonder if her
meter was correctly calibrated. From
time to time, I get thirsty but I have
sinus problems so when my nose is blocked,
I breathe more through my mouth and this
gives me a dry mouth - I don't need to
drink.
I'm very happy to diet - but I'm not going
to lose 9 stone overnight so I need a good
solution.
If anyone could answer for me:
1) How long does Thrush last?
2) Does anything I've explained make
people wonder if I should investigate
Diabetes any further?
3) Any other advice very welcome (if
constructive).
