My best friend gave me a pack of birth
control today that she had leftover from
when she went off them. It is an unopened
pack of Portia. I planned on starting them
this sunday and finishing the pack and
then go to to the doctor and get on maybe
the patch or a different kind of bc pill
if i dont like this Portia. Im dreading
going to the doctor very much and taking
these will help me put it off for a couple
weeks and still be started on something. I
might even like the Portia and got a free
pack. Please help

Don't be worried about going to the
doctor. You should go and let him/her
prescribe something for YOU. Find a
female doctor if it makes you feel more
comfortable. Birth control pills are not
an instant preventative - don't put it
off. I promise it will make you feel a
lot better to get an exam, positive PAP
test, and birth control suitable for YOU.
My doctor recommended 2 months use before
having unprotected sex, with my husband,
to prevent pregnancy.

i don't think it is a very smart idea to
go on any birth control pill without the
consent of your doctor first.

Going to the doctor for birth control
isn't that bad. I have a friend that went
and was prescribe birth control and didn't
even have to get a pelvic exam right off.
(She wil have to go back in six months for
it but its kinda of like your plan for
putting it off).
Go to the doctor, and get something for
you. You won't even really know if you
like the pills or not by the end of one
month anyways. Any real side effects
didn't come for me until at least the
third straight month of taking pills. And
eeyore46 is right, you're really supposed
to take pills for a certain amount of time
before you're even protected. My doctor
told me a month. So really there's no
reason not to just go in and get something
a little more long term.

I was on ortho tricyclen lo before and i
hated them. I had to go to the doctor
twice. Once to get on them and another for
a yearly med check. When i got off them i
never went back. I always had SEVER
anxiety when i went, often had to excuse
myself because i thought i was gonna pass
out. I would love to just go to the doctor
and have her just write me out a
prescription and not even check me out.
Its just a hassle and its very awkward and
uncomfortable. I dont wanna go but i guess
i have to. I really dont see a problem
with me taking these pills. At least it
will get me started and i wont have to
wait as long for them to become effective.
I will never get over this sever anxiety.

well you were able to form an opinion
about Ortho tricyclen because you were on
it for two years. One month isn't going to
do anything but remind you what its like
to remember to have to take your pill
every night.
If you've had problems with birth control
before then why on earth would you just
take some random birth control pill
without talking to your doctor? It might
be similar to the pill you just finished
taking. If your anxiety was caused by the
pill then your doctor would know why and
be able to get your something that won't
cause it as much or at all.

I would definitely go to a doctor before
you try. It is important because they do
things like measure your blood pressure
and check to make sure you aren't anemic.
Without the checkup and the okay from the
doctor, there may be something wrong with
your body preventing you from going on
birth control or certain types of it that
you wouldn't know about and could be of a
risk to you.

I was realllly nervous about going to the
gyno for the first time too, but it wasnt
bad at all... they didnt even have to do
any examinations or anything I basically
just talked to the doctor and she gave me
a perscription. Also, it was really
helpful because there are tons of
different brands of birth control and some
have different side effects than others
and my doctor was able to help me choose
the right kind based on what I wanted and
didnt want to get out of my pill. One
month on these new pills you have isnt
going to do anything for you, you would
have to use a back up form of birth
control for most of the month AND a month
isnt long enough to see if you really like
that brand as your body doesnt really
start to adjust until at least 3 months on
the pills. I would reccommend heading to
the doctor before you start taking those
pills.

I am aware that they wont be effective for
over a month and i plan on using a second
form of BC even when they are effective. I
just want to get started on something so
when i go to the doctor to get a
presctiption i will already be almost
active with the birth control. But idk i
guess it was a stupid question for me to
ask. The bottom line is i really dont find
it to be necissary to be thoroughly
checked out to get on birth control, it
should be my choice wether i want someone
looking at my body. I have been off birth
control for almost 2 years now and i still
feel the same anxiety and panic that i
have always felt.

I know its your choice who you want
looking at your body, but the fact is that
birth control is something that is
prescribed, and that is for specific
reasons. If birth control is safe for
anyone at any time it would be something
available over the counter.
Saying that is the equivelent to saying
you feel sad and your friend has anti
depressants and you think its okay to take
them.
You don't know what dose is right for you.
You don't know if your blood pressure is
okay for you to be taking it. You don't
know if you are in the correct health.
It may seem scary, but you really need to
get your body checked out, ESPECIALLY if
you are sexually active. Would you prefer
have a woman look at your body and feel
uncomfortable for five minutes, or would
you rather find out five years down the
road that you have cervical or breast
cancer and were too scared to find it in
its early stages and have to deal with
doctors for many many more years?
Please do yourself and your body a favor
and get checked just so you can know you
are healthy and all is well.

I wish you could go to my doctor. She is
sooooo kind and makes small talk all
through the exam. She is great! How old
are you? If you don't want to go now,
then use condoms. Don't use the pills your
friend gave you - it is just prolonging
your visit - get it over with so that you
can stop thinking about it. Your doctor
may want to prescribe a low dose pill,
which has less side effects, but are still
very effective. Tell your doctor of your
concerns and maybe you will not have to be
examined. But..........I promise you it
is worth it - there are so many women who
suffer from cervica, uterine, and ovarian
cancer. I hate it each and every time,
but I am always very relieved when the
test comes back clear! Be strong, grit
your teeth, and endure it - you have been
before, so you know it doesn't hurt. I
promise you it will be worth it. If you
just can't make yourself do it yet, go to
a local clinic, college, or somewhere
where they will just prescribe the pill
for you without the exam.
