Birth Control and Antibiotics Posted: 03-03-08 12:07pm
I am on Sprintec (birth control), and was
put on Ciprofloxacin twice for UTI's.
Since I used both (BC and antibiotic) at
the same time, did the Cipro cause the
Birth control to lose any effectiveness?

Yes it could have.
Antibiotics do not 'cancel out' birth
control..
What happens is that they MAY reduce the
amount of hormones in your system, this is
caused by the antibiotics action on the
liver.
SAFEST thing to do is use
condoms/spermicide while you use
antibiotics.

Here's the thing, I just read online that
it could cause BC to be slightly less
effective. This scares me because my doc
never told me. I had sex with my bf while
I was on antibiotics, without a condom
(about 2 weeks ago). We just broke up last
night.

Gotcha..
The reason why many doctors do not tell
this to women is because it is not
guaranteed to happen.
Only one small study showed an interaction
with birth control, and it was only with
one type of antibiotic, but of course
many people believe "Better safe than
sorry".
You can take a pregnancy test 2 weeks
after the last time you had sex, it would
be accurate..
BUT, most likely you would not be
pregnant.

If you miss your next period take a
pregnancy test.
I got pregnant on the pill because I took
antibiotics too. My doctor never told me
either.
There's a chance you can get pregnant,
just be careful next time you use
antibiotics. Always use a condom while on
them-just in case.
Try not to stress about it until you miss
your period though. Stress/worrying can
cause your period to delay. Good luck!

Thank you so much for your responses. I
did a little research on Cipro, and found
out that it doesn't change the
effectiveness of BC. I'm hoping that this
information is true. Thank you again for
your help.
