birth control pill effective date ? Posted: 06-12-08 16:17pm
I gave birth to my first baby 7 weeks ago.
I re-started my birth control pill
(Mircette) on May 31st. My first period
since my pregnancy began on June 9th. I
have nearly completed 2 weeks on the pill.
In the patient instructions it states
that if I take my first birth control pill
on the first day of my period I do not
need to use a back-up method of birth
control once my period is complete. Can I
assume that when my period is over I can
safely have sex without the risk of
pregnancy?
My OB/GYN office has a standard answer
that I have to complete a full pack of
birth control pills before I can have sex
without using a back-up method of
protection . . . but that doesn't seem to
be the case from what I have read online
and from the patient instructions.
If you start the pills on the first day of
your period you don't need additional
contraception (condom). So, in your case
you can safely have sex without the risk
of pregnancy. if you start in Sunday after
the period started you need additional
contraception for the next 7 days.
You OB/GYN office gave you that standard
advice to use additional contraception for
a whole month probably because they wanted
higher security. I don't think you need
additional contraception for that long.
