Q: Bradycardia

I am a 51 yo woman with high cholesterol, but great HDLs. Have bradycardia down to 41 bpm during the day sometimes, 24 bpm at 4am, per Holter monitor. Diagnosed with sick sinus syndrome, but stress test showed perfect heart. Tested thyroid but TSH normal. I do have some SOB and fatigue when running, but no dizziness or fainting. My cardiologist said I didn't have to restrict exercise, could even train for a marathon, if I wanted. However, aren't I at increased risk for heart attack? I want to continue to investigate the bradycardia because I must be getting so little blood to brain and heart and extremities. Any suggestions?

Thanks much.

Bradycardia is not a risk factor for developing heart attack. Risk factors for heart attack and stroke are: smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, male sex, early climax, psychical stress, overweight etc.
Do you have any other symptoms beside bradycardia?

Bradycardia
I have had occasional vague mild chest 'sensations' for several months; usually when still; not during exercise, except for one time there was pain running up under my left jaw while running hills. The 'sensations' feel like mild muscle strain or gas pains, but are more frequent than anything previously.

I have all of the sx of hypothyroidism, and am taking a low dose of Synthroid, but TSH is normal.

What about the risk factors I mentioned in my previous post?

Bradycardia
The only risk factor I have is high cholesterol, which my mother also had.

In that case your risk for getting heart attack or stroke is mild to moderate. Bradicardia by itself can't cause heart attack or stroke but extreme bradycardia can cause lower blood supply to the brain that can be manifested with syncope attacks. If those syncopes become intolerant you may need to implant pacemaker for treating the sick sinus syndrome.

Thank you. You've confirmed exactly what my cardiologist said.
