Bulimia (Asking for help)
Posted: 07-17-08 23:10pm

I'm 17 years old, 5'5 about 110lbs. I feel great about myself, extremely active, tri-athlete, good student, involved in as much as I can and so excited about my future. But over the past year I started growing and losing weight naturally and I didn't want to put any weight on so thats when bulimia came into the picture. I know myself well and I would think I could overcome this by myself, but I'm having doubts that I can do it by myself. I haven't told anyone because I'm pretty disappointed in myself. Recently I've been getting horrible stomach pains which is causing a loss of appetite...so I'm asking for help. All this has got to stop and I want a healthy lifestyle.
Thanks for reading.

Hi Keeno,

I think you've made the first step in looking for help, which is recognizing that this is not good for your health. My husband was actually bulimic when he was in high school (he wasn't my husband then) and on and off through college... he always told me that he "had it under control" but he was full of crap! It wasn't until he admitted to me that he had a problem - and I helped him by seconding his desire to quit - that he was finally able to stop.

Even though it might be hard, I would actually suggest telling someone that can keep you accountable - someone you're around regularly who might notice if you make a quick trip to the bathroom.

Hello Keeno, about your problem, i am very much agreed with rowdyg but if u feel not to keep accountable with u then you canyourself maintain a diary but stick on that. For a time being jus write down and plan out evrything you can feel to control yourself.

If you want to have something then you can eat but take some small gap/time intervals....have something light that you can digest...Keep avoiding even looking at junk and canned food.

For the results first and formost you have to be strict on your plans. If this doen't work and if you are having problem maintaining this..will suggest you other good solution but atleast give a week trial strictly.

If she is having horrible stomach pains she sounds like she must having another condition aside of the eating disorder. That pain could be due to ulcers. I would go to the doctor asap.

you seem very competative - which is a great quality to have, and one that can help you to achieve alot in life. nevertheless, you may want to ask yourself whether you are doing all this for attention, for approval, or to attain something that you want.

i'm sure that its a combination of all those things. approval and attention feed our ego, but that sort of fuel tends to make us only crave more. i would suggest that you re-evaluate your priorities in life.

also, there is a difference between attention and love. it's natural to want to be loved and to love others.

we are all seeking love in all of it's forms. don't settle for flattery.

good luck

all of this bulemia and stomach pains are just symptoms of the pressure you are putting on yourself. just ask yourself why.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, it is helpful.
Going back to what a few of you have said,
I do keep a journal...since I was 8 now. I'm going to reevaluate my priorities and whats important to me. Health is a top priority. Since I've posted this forum I've actually been doing better...I think that I released a little of this ridiculous secret I've been keeping it's taken weight off my shoulders.
The competiveness danielv has to be a factor.
I know many may think I should tell someone close to me about this, but I'm going to give it about a week to see if I can really stop the nonsense on my own.
Going to an online forum is very unlike me...I'm glad I did. Thanks again.

Hey keeno, it's gud to know that you really taking all this things so sincerely and dedicately working as very true and i am also agreed with danielv that we should ser priorities in life first. And i am so happy that you know how health is important. Competiveness can be a factor but not dominating over other important factors. Don't take too much stress and jus keep a track of small things also. Take your own sweet time, a week or two but analyse carefully so that u can leave a mark on this forum with a well known identity and it will work for others also who suffering from same problem.

If everything going well and it effect jus suggest and share your views on this forum to help others too

good luck

There is help...

Keeno, for eating disorders there is a 12-step program called Food Addicts in Recovery that is for both overweight and those with ED to stay thin. It is a fellowship of those that help you deal with what is going on inside your head that makes people over eat or starve or purge. Not sure if there are any meetings in your area, but you can check online at www.foodaddicts.org.

It's a non-profit organization that is self funded, there are no dues or membership fees, people donate a dollar or two at each meeting. Like with alcoholics, food addicts have found an uncontrollable urge to eat because of an allergy to sugar, and flour. Once you find a sponsor, you are guided in a new way of eating and trusting a Higher Power to help you do what you can't do on your own. Check out the website.

Slowly but surely

Just an update:
I'm not completely recovered and I'm still pretty upset with myself about that, but I think I've been improving. I know its horrible, but I was doing the bulimic thing almsot everyday and lately its just been every once in awhile...I know its not perfect but I feel like its an improvement from where I was a few weeks/month ago.
My schedules been very busy...stressful, but the busy part helps because I'm occupied on the tasks at hand rather than sitting back and stressing about stupid things.
I stand alone when it comes to fixing this because I'm too ashamed to tell anyone besides the "forum" ha, but in the long run I think this will make me stronger. I hope this is helping other people reading as well.
Take care everyone
