Q: Can an ultrasound be wrong?

I had an emergency ultrasound this past tuesday because I've been bleeding throughout my whole pregnancy. I'm 15w 1d and I dont know how accurate the U/S would be at this point. After she looked at what she needed to she began to try to see the sex of the baby. Well this kid was so hyper! She couldnt even get a good picture because he/she was standing on its head, and doing front flips! It was hilarious! Very Happy

Well the lady said, it looks like a boy! Of course I'm gonna be happy, but I wanted to know if it was a boy for sure. I asked her "Is it a boy or does it LOOK like a boy?" She said it just "looks like a boy". So I dont know if I should be excited about it maybe being a boy, or if I should wait until the next one to see if it really is a boy.

In my heart of hearts, I feel like its a GIRL! I've dreamt of it being a girl, this pregnancy is totally different from my first with my son, and of course my family thinks its a girl! I dont want anyone to think that I'm being ungrateful, because I should be happy that the baby is fine considering all the things wrong with me! I am, I just really want to know if I should tell my family that its a boy and we're not even sure yet!

So my question is, does anyone think that the ultrasound could have been wrong? It's amazing how similar the boy and girl parts look at this point!
Any advice will be greatly appreciated! Smile

Yes, they can be wrong. I was pretty lucky with mine she just laid there and when she lifted her legs to kick it was a clear girl! Smile

As long as your baby is healthy. I would confirm with the next ultrasound. Smile

Good luck!

Well I've been on bed rest the last few days and been watching the discovery channel baby network on demand, and they said all fetuses start out with what looks like a penis, and if it's a girl it changes into girl parts between 15-18 weeks. They say ultrasounds aren't usually accurate till about 20 weeks and sometimes not even completely then. Unfortunately I think it maybe to soon to tell what the little squirmer may be. My DR wouldn't confirm for us what we were having till 24 weeks, and it was a girl. I felt the entire time since I found out I was pregnant it was a boy, so shows how much I know. HAHAHA. Good luck with everthing and I hope you don't have any more bleeding or complications.

its very possible that it could be wrong, she may have saw the umbilical cord and mistaken it for a penis since the baby was moving around so much

id wait until the next ultrasound to get excited Smile

Well I had to go to the ER again on monday for severe cramping and bleeding, luckily the baby was just fine, but I did get another u/s. The technician said that she was almost positive that its a boy! My first born is a boy so we still have all of his baby clothes which is wonderful so we wont go around buying clothes for the wrong gender! I really dont care what it is, I'm just really happy that even after all this bleeding I'm doing, and my doctors are complete morons and have no clue whats wrong with me, my baby is still healthy!

ultrasounds are never 100% the sure thing.
they sometimes are wrong, they usually tell you when you get your ultrasound done that its not a 100% sure thing.
They usually say if you can see something it could be a boy, but then again it could be the cord mistaken for boy parts, its not a very clear thing to see when theres movement plus alot of liquid in the way and looks all blurry.

Yeah, they can be wrong.

My aunt was told it was a boy. She got plenty of blue stuff. Then, iT WAS A GIRL!!!!

So, they can mess those things up from time to time.

All other pregnancy's i've known about have been right though.

CONGRATULATIONS either way! Very Happy
