cause of carpal tunnel syndrome ?
Posted: 04-20-08 11:25am

I recently got carpal tunnel syndrome. My dad who is a doctor diagnosed it when I told him my symptoms and told me to take an anti inflammatory drug

I am fairly sure that my I got CTS from lifting weights because that is the only physical activity I have been doing. However, I don't know which particular exercise has caused it.

I would like to eliminate whatever exercise is causing it and continue on with my normal weight lifting routine until my wrists heal. But like I said before I don't know what's caused it.

Does anybody have any idea which exercise may have caused it?

Try wearing wrist supporters, and ease up on the exercising. Do you exercise at a gym, if so, ask a trainer there? Until then, ease up on any weight lifting that has to do with the wrists and continue the anti-inflammatory meds. You do not want to damage the nerves and end up having surgery.

thanks for the reply.

I usually exercise at the weight room at my school, so theres no trainer there to ask. I have a membership to a gym though so I'll try asking one of the trainers there.

are you talking about the wrist supports that you where at night?

My son had to wear it 24 hours a day, and took ibuprofen until his symptoms subsided, approximatley two weeks. His was caused from bowling - lol! You can buy them at Wal-Mart.

I have been a massage therapist for 17 years and have been a student of CPS and related disorders.

Firstly just because you have the symptoms of carpal tunnel does not necessarily mean that is what you have. Nerve pinching can occur anywhere along the nerve path from the base of the neck on down and can occur in multiple places as well.

It is important to know that the forearm muscles move the wrist and fingers. Clenching the fist while doing bicep curls or any other activity leads to overuse of the forearm. You need to keep an open hand when doing these exercises.

If need be you can use wrist straps to help keep the wrist open.

Also it is important to have the back of the hand in a streight line with the forearm. You don't want a bend at the wrist. A bend at the wrist puts added strain on the long skinny tendons that run from the forearm muscles to the fingers.

Another thing. While Ibuprophen etc. has immediate results, it can cause long term damage. Why? Because your natural anti-inflamitory response does not respond, because it is like shutting the engine warning light off in the car. Naturally your T-cells would carry away cellular debris. But with the warning light off (so to speak) they don't respond and debris can build up.

Ice is a much better anti-inflamatory, because it encourages the body's natural response. Yes it is more work than taking a pill.
