asked by: DoctorQuestion on June 4th, 2009
my last period was 4/20/2009 i have had 4 positive pregnancy tests so far 2 at home 1 at the doctor and 1 at the er. I had sum cramping along with some bleeding and went to the emergency room my bhcg level was 98 which i was told was really low mi u/s did not show anything except that i had some fibroids i continued to bleed and i have passed a couple of quarter size clots. Are the fibroids responsible for the bleeding and is it possible that i have already misscaried ?

According to the symptoms you reported (cramps, bleeding, passing few blood clots, low laboratory results for beta-hcg),it seems likely that there is a possibility that a miscarriage may have already occurred. On the other hand, fibroids are one of the possible causes for unexpected bleeding.

However, they usually do not lower beta-hcg which is expected to be increased in pregnancy. Every bleeding during pregnancy might be a sign of serious condition for the baby or for the mother, or both, and should be treated as such until proved otherwise.

You might want to visit your gynecologist for a physical examination and an ultrasound scan to check your pregnancy and to see if there are other bigger fibroids which might have caused the bleeding. Other causes for unexpected bleeding during pregnancy should be examined, too.
