When both cholesterol and triglycerides
are elevated, the medicine of choice is
from the group of statines (simvastatine,
pravastatin, lovastatin…). If
triglycerides are above 4,5 mmol/L a
combination of some statin and some
fibrate (gemfibrozyl, fenofibrate,
bezafibrate) is used. Unfortunately both
of these groups of medicines (statines and
fibrates) can cause liver damage.
Other medicines for treating the increased
blood fats are:
1. Rezines (cholestiramin and cholestipol)
– they don’t affect the liver but act
only on total cholesterol (TC) and LDL;
2. Guar-gum - it doesn’t affect the
liver but acts only on the TC and LDL;
3. Ezetimb (Ezentia) - prevents absorption
of the cholesterol in the intestines. Acts
on both cholesterol and triglycerides. It
does not affect the liver.
Diet and physical activities are
absolutely necessary and are the first
step in treating such disorders. You
should also check if you have diabetes or
hypothyroidism because they can also cause
increased blood fats.
You may want to consult an endocrinologist
about your case.
