colonoscopy after rectal bleeding Posted: 03-14-08 16:57pm
Ok guys and gals. I am worried or I
wouldnt be here, right. Here is the short
version.
2 weeks ago on a Wednesday, I noticed some
maroon colored blood inside my stool and
brighter red blood on the stool and a
little in the water.
The next day, no blood. On Friday morning,
Friday night and saturday morning there
was more blood, mostly maroon in the
stool. The blood was pretty light but
there.
Saturday morning I went to the emergency
room.
They did a blood test and found everything
normal. I have literally no other
symptoms. no naseau, no change in bowel
habits, no pain, no vomiting, no
tenderness, no bloated feeling, diarrhea
or feeling that I have not emptied. no
headaches or dizziness. Nothing.
They referred me to a doctor for a
colonoscopy. I made the appt the following
monday for Friday. Since then, everything
has returned to normal.
Friday I see the doctor and he says
because I am 52 (yes, I know I should have
gone a couple of years ago) I should have
th colonoscopy but scheduled it for three
weeks from now. He had a heavy accent and
was difficult to understand but basically
said there was no way to tell anything
without the colonoscopy. I asked to get in
sooner but he said not to worry just
manage the schedule.
He told me to call him if any new symptoms
reappear of bleeding restarts.
On his medical history questionaire the
only thing I noted as exceptional was
stress and that I take aspirin daily as a
blood thinner. I aslo take a number of
supplements like fish oil, cholesoff
(plant sterols), b-complex.
I have not eaten beets or any colored
foods and do not have a family history
with colon cancer, but the three week wait
has me on edge.
Any advice?

Hi, Seasteve! Posted: 03-19-08 04:39am
Maroon-colored stools or bright red blood
usually suggest that the blood is coming
from the lower part of the GI tract (large
bowel or rectum) Hemorrhoids and
diverticulitis (inflammation of an
abnormal pouch in the colon) are the most
common causes of lower GI bleeding.
However, sometimes massive or rapid
bleeding in the stomach causes bright red
stools. (bleeding from stomach usually
gives black, tar looking stool)
Did you have fever?
Have you been examined for hemorrhoids?

The colonoscopy will tell. Bright red
means you are bleeding very low in the
intestine or rectum. Black or maroon would
mean it is higher up in the colon. So,
MandMs is right on the money.
