Crohn's disease and IBS
Posted: 05-04-08 09:23am

About1-2 times a month around 3 or 4 am I am awakened by severe stomache cramps.for about 20 minutes to a half hour my intestines gurgle and the pain persist until I begin to pass hard stools that eventually turn into liquid stool. Once I pass the liquid stool I know the episode is over. Is this related to IBS or crohns?

I have a high fiber diet and regular bowel movements.these episodes only happen at night.

Your symptoms (monthly stomach cramps that persist until you pass a stool) can happen in both conditions. Crohn’s disease is a serious condition that can be proven with intestinal passage (contrast X-ray image) and colonoscopy with a biopsy. IBS is a functional disorder that can be diagnosed when all organic possibilities (including Crohn’s disease) have been excluded.
