crown removal
Posted: 04-23-08 19:26pm

I recently had a crown put on my right lower molar. Now I have pain from heat and cold, my TMJ is bothering me, and it feels like I'm chewing on a piece of rock. Can a crown be removed and, if it can, will I have any tooth left to chew on?

Hi eaglesclaw121,

Usually, when they prep the tooth for the crown, they cut the tooth down so that there's nothing left but a 'post' type piece left for the crown to fit over.

Speaking from my own crown experience, I was still pretty sensitive to heat and cold for at least a month or two after I got the crown. Even today, I still have to be careful about how long I leave cold foods (like ice cream) in that area, but it isn't nearly as bad as it was, at first.

You mentioned that your TMJ is bothering you and it feels like you're chewing on a piece of rock; that makes it sound, to me, like the crown isn't the right shape or is too high.

If you haven't, already, I'd suggest giving your dentist a call and letting them know that you're having some problems with the crown and that it might need some adjusting. If you've already seen them a few times about it or they won't see you, have a second dentist look at it (a second opinion never hurts).

Good luck; I hope you find some relief soon.

high occlusion ,go to your dentist and he will adjust your bite because crown is higher than your other teeth
