Q: Cytomegalovirus and pregnant women ?

I placed this post here as it relates to pregnancy. My son was born with CMV (Cytomegalovirus). The doctors at the time told us to warn pregnant women of this if they handle my son. He is now 11. Knowing the virus stays in your system forever, can he still pass it onto another? Should I still continue to alert pregnant women when being around him?

Ive never heard of this virus, But if the doctors have told you to warn people. there must be a reason. so it must do the unborn baby harm if they were to come into contact with your son. i would continue to tell people of your sons condition. All the best

I find out that most people don't know anything about CMV. It is never disccused anywhere and is usually harmless. To a fetus, however, you will run across big problems. In my sons case the damage from CMV is Deafness, Staring siezures, Mild CP and grey matter brain damage. This brings on developmental delays, Muscle controll issues (minor), and slow growth. From what the doctors told me back then my sons outcome is not near the worst case cenerio. Just do a google search on CMV and pregnancy if you want to know more.

When it was dicovered that the mother had been infected (three months pregnant) with CMV test (ultrasounds) where done to see if the fetus caught it. When it was decided the fetus did catch it it was all explained to us of the possibilities. Although it was not said abortion was strongly hinted from the doctor. MY son had to be delevered one month early by C-section. Ultrasounds where showing signs of things really going wrong. To avoid death the surgury was done. He only spent one week in NICU. Born in at 4 pounds. Gained one more pound in that week. We took him home and he is still with me today.

Just proves the power of a parrents love. Me knowing I will have a child with dissabilities before birth. Knowing all the challenges I would face. Knowing the ungodfull option exsists. It was the love that makes me accept him for the way he is. I do not see it as a burden on my life. Nobody should. its called unconditional love.
