Discharge Even After Surgery to Remove Duct
Posted: 01-28-04 17:57pm

In september, almost 5 months ago, I noticed a lump in my left breast, under the areola near the nipple. Since early october, I have had discharge with blood from the same side. I had a surgery to remove the lump in late october. Turned out to be "florid adenosis." good news.
As soon as the bandages came off though, I noticed that the discharge was still present. Had a ductogram, and second surgery in mid-december which removed a duct containing solid material and what was apparently a ruptured cyst. The surgeon said that none of that ordinarily would've bled, but was happy to have gotten it out - again, all things considered, good pathology news.
However, once again after the bandages came off, the bloody discharge is still present. From what I can see, it looks to be coming from the same area, but maybe from more than one duct.
I have a two-fold question; first:
what in the heck is wrong with me??? Because although it may be something that has to come out, I have no intention of having a 3rd surgery unless someone can tell me that.
Second: I live in a fairly remote location, and there aren't too many doctors to give me an opinion. I'm probably going to have to go to a larger area, likely salt lake city, ut. I need to find a breast specialist, but am becoming frustrated with that search. Can't find too much on the internet relating to mds in that area, and all my surgeon or primary care md can give me are "best guest" names as neither of them personally know anyone there. The names i've been given are both for general surgeons who have some experience with breast work. I don't know that that's what's best.
Ideally, i'd have a plastic surgeon do the work, as i've been left with less than desireable appearance due to the prior two surgeries. However, i'm not sure that this is a person who can identify what the problem really is - especially if no one i've seen thusfar has nailed it. My guess is that i'd have to involve either one of the previously mentioned general surgeons, and/or some sort of internal medicine md.
So, in winding up: a) what could be wrong?? And b) what do I do now, who's the best person to call, and how do I look for them?
Any advice, words of wisdom, or referral information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Have you seen an actual gyno? They would have more specialized knowledge than a primary care person yet are more common than breast specialists. Or if they had a "women's health" unit.

I certainly wouldn't let them do another surgery until they knew what the problem was!

What you could do, also, is just to call up the hospitals in the area and ask about their staff, and just ask if anyone (formally or informally) specializes in breast issues or women's health issues. Then, after the medical stuff is figured out, think about the plastic surgeon.

Sorry, I have no idea what could be wrong!!
