Hi, I am looking for advice on ongoing
issues with my left kidney.
Back in 1997 when pregnant with my first
daughter I experienced regular UTI's and a
U/S scan revealed a left pelvic kidney
which was rotated and slightly smaller,
they told me I was getting reflux. I went
on anti biotics for the duration of my
pregnancy and also throughout my 2nd
pregnancy in 2000 and my 3rd pregnancy in
2004. During these years I had occasional
UTI's all treated my antibiotics.
On a family holiday last Christmas I
suffered the most horrific bout of
abdominal pain just to the right of my
left hip bone, right where my kidney is.
I suffered nausea, vomiting, temp, the
sweats, and I lost weight all in the space
of a week. I saw a GP who diagnosed
heartburn and put me on losec!!!! No
wonder that didnt work and a week later I
saw my own GP who put me on antibiotics.
He did a blood test which showed mild
anaemia (10.4) the ESR was considerably
raised (indication of inflammation) but a
urine test proved normal.
The pain continued but the other symptoms
of infection eased although nausea and the
inability to eat properly remained. My
G.P refered me to a gastro speacialist as
the urine test was OK he didnt feel my
kidney was the root cause.
I have since undergone a flexible
sygmoidoscopy ,
white cell scan, numerous blood tests
which still show anaemia and raised
inflammation levels, x-rays, and
ultrasound scans and on friday I'm having
an endoscopy. So far all the tests have
been normal, except for the discovery of
gallstones which they say is unrelated.
Today I saw my GP after getting a letter
requesting me to see him. He'd gotten a
report from my pelvic scan and wanted to
refer me to a kidney specialist.
Apparantly my left kidney also has duplex
system, the word velvet was mentioned?????
and the way he described it to me, the
muscle at the bottom of my kidney where
the urine leaves to go to the bladder is
continually pulsating which shouldn't
happen and can be "very painful" according
to him and needs further investigation.
Sorry this is long winded, but what can
this all mean. In the last 7 months I
have been suffering and undergone so many
horrible invasive tests and I wish I knew
what was wrong. I'm only 29, feel 60!!!!
Could it be my kidney after all?
