eye floaters & TMJ
Posted: 03-11-08 14:47pm

hi, im 17 years old and i have recently had my braces taken off. i noticed i had tmj about 3 quarters of the way through the braces process when my jaw would crack and pop so loud that people could hear it from the other side of the table when i ate anything. I know for certain that i have TMJ as iv done alot of my own research.
ocasionaly ill get ringing in the ears and i had some pretty bad headaches but the headaches have sort of passed.
My question is, lately iv been getting Head-pains and eye floaters. i know the floaters are normal because i only get them when looking at something bright outdoors but i never used to get them and i get quite a few now. (also the head-pains are in the top, back, left) part of my head. im not sure if its because of the tmj or not but if you follow a line from my jaw to the top of my head on the left side thats where i get the pain. sometimes it will be on th right side as well.

please send me replys if you think this is normal
thank you.

for a tmj patient yes this is normal. i thihk that you should get yourself into a neuromuscular dentis. im sure that the cause of this is the braces. your muscles are now out of sync with the muscles. you should get in as soon as you can. if you need help finding one let me kno ---i can help you with that.

The same thing happened to me back when I had braces! It still bothers me to this day, although luckily it's not TOO frequently. Sometimes my jaw locks up so bad it makes it hard to eat. Sad

thats good you think its because of my tmj because i couldnt seem to find a reason for the headpains/headaches everysingle day for past 5-6 weeks...i was turning into a hypocondriac searching the web everyday thinking it was a tumor or something like that even though i knew it probably wasnt because the doctor did a minor physical test and said he didnt at all think it was seriouse even though the pain can make me think its something serious...i never had any nausia or vomiting because of it or seizures or anything like that so im assuming its because of the tmj as well

as far as finding me a proper dentist i live in New Brunswick Canada so i dont know if you would be able to find one.

that would be good. But are you sure the headpains are from TMJ. because for some reason i have turned myself into a complete hypocondriac and i keep thinking that its a tumor in my brain. The headaches dont usualy star oppon awakening and the head pains are usualy pretty mild. But when i do get the headaches they can be kind of intence bu never last more then a minute or so and they happen around twice a day. I also have the ear pressure sometimes. and sometimes have ringing. and the eye floaters while outside are really anoying. what do you think?

absolutly they are from the tmd. tmd gives you what is called referred pain. it can make you feel like you are having a ear infection adn your ears are fine. toothaches, headaches etc. dont worry about a tumor. its more than likely your jaw telling your body that it hurts ---heck i even have one side of my jaw that referrs pain to the other side. mean ole jaw lol:)

alright im not so much worried about a tumor anymore..but i do think that the cause could be Neuralgia Inducing Cavitational Osteonecrosis. also known as NICO. do you think thats it? the only reason i think this is because it says the area of the pain is directly over the the jaw which is where my pain is.

it could very well be--- but before saying that it is that have your doctor test you for it. it could just be a case of tmd.

are you relieved or still chronic pain? I've had TMJ for 18 year
Posted: 03-17-08 09:17am

Hi, just thought I might ease your stress thru my experiences. As you prob. already know, the easing of stress is extremely helpful in itself. First, if you are still having probs, or vomit, vertigo, funky eye stuff, tell your doctor, that you need an mri, to rule your fears out for tumor, etc. It will more than likely be fine, since you know you have tmj. TMJ, I used to want to chop my head off, at the beginning, especially since I got it from getting my wisdom teeth out, and had a newborn then they found out all I needed was root canal. So, for 18 years, i've managed with my tmj. After being bopped around from doc to doc...you prob. know the routine! There are some good doctors out there, you just have to find one you trust, and you will be almost instantly feeling better-the mind relaxed will do wonders, especially since TMJ is really not something that gets better. In some cases, they can do surgery, but even in my case, they come out feeling as good as I do now, so I really did "learn to live with it", and you actually do forget you have it. Recently, I went to doctors (last month) because I had bad vertigo, and passed out while vomiting. This has never happened to me because of TMJ, but the ENT thought this was the cause-I forgot all about my TMJ, so possibly a flair up, but then on 2nd visit had some congestion, now I've just finished a series of antibiotics, that only made me tired, but a low dose of valium just at night has helped my neck tremendously. I am continuing to go to all doctors, to make sure I am feeling the best that I can. My blood work came up positive for Epstein Bar, which explains why I am always so tired, again, another one can't do anything about. So, my plan is to keep moving, rest when I can, and continue to find answers...chiropractor was a big help for my overall alignment, and a hot tub. I plan to revisit the chiro, now with my new symptoms, and inquire about my neck that cracks so much and so loud, during the night, I roll over and my whole body is like moving a breaking skeleton, so my newest question, as I am only 45 years old, why do I have this arthritis- I was told it is arthritis, but why is my question..for years I asked could i have arthritis, I am sooo achy, and the docs said no. I know young people can have it, ...anyway, i hope some of my experience helps you, and please share any thoughts you have, too. I have been really lightheaded and dizzy with a backache since December, and missing a lot of work-no sick days, either, going to gyno tomorrow, then will ask to go to neurologist, want to cover all bases!!

forgot to say I also used to have migraines at least a few times
Posted: 03-17-08 09:23am

a week, when I first got the tmj--it really does get better, once you take antiinflamortories, to calm it down. I hate taking meds, so I just took doctor-recomended dose of advil (more than the usual amount), and then I was so happy after a few months when I could actually get a normal headache without a migraine! YOu will get to know your body more each day, and know what you need to do, and share your thoughts with the doctor you trust. they will be more tahn happy to work with you if you are seeing a good doctor. don't let them brush you off, you are in pain and scared and want some answers. Ask them even what they are thinking even if he or she does not know the "answer".

first off id like to say its really chilled of all of you to take the time to actully try and comfort a teenage guy with his health concerns and i appreciate it. As far as being afraid of a "tumor" i think i was letting my mind get to be and most deffinatly my paranoia seeing as its been 7 weeks and i havnt had a single other symptom other then head pains and occasional pain in my eye or neck. and sometimes ringing in the ear that is quite mild and lasts a matter of seconds. I think if it were a tumor i would at least have seen another symptom or at least be sick or something. Although my mom is going to try and get me an MRI for the heck of it because id like to see if there is something else goin on which there probably isnt. the pains however feel like little shocks of pain in different areas all over the top of my head and i usualy just rub them and forget about it now. sometimes i get pressure in the back of my head though which can concern me. and i get eye floaters too which i never had. but i never really get to dizzy and i have yet to throw up

checking in on you

the more I reread your concerns, I know we don't like to think that we are stressed, and that we can remain "cool" at all times, but when you are in pain, you are really under quite a bit of stress, which makes TMJ so much worse. I would not hesitate, to ask the doctor for first steroids for a week, and a low dose of the valium or something that you and he feels may work, even try one and see if you are comfortable. I personally hate being on meds, and they used to prescribe me some anti-inflamatorythat I didn't feel helped, but everyone's body reacts differently. It really does all sound like Stress and TMJ. When you get to an ENT or a dentist, they will look at your teeth, and know that you are probably doing a number on them! You prob. grind at nite or at least clench, even during the day, when you are agitated, etc.-happens to the calmest of us! My advice, is speak your words to those who frustrate you, but in a respectful stern way, I don't know you, but I am trying to help any situation that may really help!, and what I am trying to say is, relieve all stress that you can, take time to be "17", the world is to be enjoyed, and try really hard to read or do something each day for yourself that you don't "have" to do so that you relax or at least are not thinking about your health. take deep breaths, and the meds will eventually will not be needed, maybe even in 2-3 weeks, if you are doing relaxing things, and having trusting doctor(s) assure you of no major problems. I too have the eye floaters, weird, huh? they come with many things as well, but with the tinnitus, it really does sound like stress and TMJ. Did I tell you don't bite into a whole apple or hard candy like ever again??
do not chew gum, or any chewy stuff; I can at times eat a cheesesteak, now, but it makes my jaw ache. You need to help yourself get better and then you will get lax and have a piece of gum here and there, or whatever but you may see that it aggravates and not want it. But in the beginning, you really need to not eat that stuff. Oh, and go to the eye doctor for your checkup; they will make you feel better about your floaters, too, and they can actually tell soooo much from the exam. My husband was floored when he was getting his eye exam when the eye doctor asked him how he was doing with his high cholestorol! He aske dhow he knew, and he said he sees a whiteness indicating this. And they now have a really advanced test that can see just about anything! kit, and good luck, enjoy some friends, and chill.

also, give a call to your orthodontist for verbal
Posted: 03-19-08 23:26pm

Remember, your whole bite was changed, as well as your jaw configuration, apparently, and this will take some time to get used to. It is so frustrating getting used to a new bite, and your teeth and jaw are like looking for a comfort zone. So if teeth are now hitting in different spots, this all puts pressure on your Temporal mandibular joint! I know you may prob. be finally enjoying chewy stuff again, but you can't with tmj.

Magnesium
Posted: 03-20-08 14:57pm

Hi 2bbalza,
Start out taking one 225/250 mg pill per day for a week or two. You can then increase the Magnesium to 500 mg a day, both taken at night before going to sleep. It can cause diarrhea, which is why you start out slowly so your body can adjust to it. I have read that you can take up to 1000 mg per day, but 500 mg helps me just fine.
