I'm basing "lower class" on the government poverty line (determined by the number of persons in your household x the current cost per person). For a family of 3, lower class would, technically, be income below $17,600. "Middle class", by definition, is anything in between "lower class" and "upper class". "Upper class" is anything above the current "maximum" income limit. The IRS uses this "maximum" for many programs, although this year it's most notably used in the stimulus program, and it currently $150,000.

I understand the derivation of the income levels and also the term "poverty", however I do not see where terms such as middle class, working class, etc., are applied.

Just to help clarify, I am discussing "social class", not just income parameters. Here is a simple definition of social class which reflects the way in which I am using the term:

An informal ranking of people in a culture based on their income, occupation, education, dwelling, and other factors.

Alright, I see where you're going now. The confusion came in when you used the terms "lower"/"middle"/"upper" class. That's usually indicative of income levels.

It looked like an interesting discussion, not really a debate.

What is the financial situation for your life? Husband in Navy and I work as a lab technician, stable

Do you work? Full time Part time? Make decent money?
part time and yes

Did you go to school/Are you attending? (not highschool--post HS education, trade school, JC, university?)
Community College to become a RNM (registered nurse-midwife)

If youre with your SO (significant other) do they work? Full time/Part time? Make decent money?
Yes, Navy, full time, E-5 almost E-6 takes the exam or whatever they call it in July

Did they go to school/Are they attending? (not highschool--post HS education, trade school, JC, university?)
yes OCHP/HVAC and other Navy schooling that counts as college credits

What other means of finances do you utilize?
none

Do you get government assistance? Do your parents help? Do you solely live off your parents financial means? Do you work under the table (i.e. unlicensed babysitting?)
when we first became parents it was really hard, I worked at a daycare center and he worked at a welding company, had enough money to just get by (had a one bedroom apt, and enough money for food and diapers, I breastfed for about 2 weeks, got a major bout of dual-mastitis(in BOTH boobs Sad )made like 4 dollars above the threshold for WIC so that wasn't an option Mad ) but we never had any other financial support other than Medicaid for our son until Tricare took over

and if youre willing to answer... your class... high upper, upper, low upper, upper middle, middle, lower middle, lower, poor...?
i'd say about lower middle because in the Armed Forces you get a BAH (basic allowance for housing) that either totally offsets or mostly offsets the cost of housing unless you are living in non-privatized quarters...so its basically free, our health insurance is not free, however it doesnt cost much

Just wondering, if the questions are too personal dont answer... I am just curious kind of behind everyones story... their daily means and needs and struggles or eases... etc...

What is really hard is living with a child with ADHD/slight OCD. He is such a sweetheart and I know he cant help his impulses. It got really bad before we had the workup done on him involving paperwork from teachers and me and DH's observations of his behavior. He would go outside at three in the morning, without us knowing until our neighbor brought him home...this was with those alarms that go at the top of your door to alert you when the door is open...he would drag a chair to the door and turn the alarm off...smart kid. He was impulsive...very impulsive. He also struggled with everyday normal tasks; sitting down to eat at dinner, finishing homework, focusing on one thing for more than three minutes. But now he is on Adderol and all of that stuff has stopped. However; being on Adderol has its downs as well. He may be more focused but he is also more sensitive and emotional. Yesterday, another neighbor (one whom I don't know well but dislike regardless) told him to please not hit her dog...he was trying to pet the puppy. Well, off his medicine, he would probably just give her a nasty look or go about as if nothing happened, but on Adderol, my poor baby just sat down and started sobbing Crying
or Very sad . He also has a bit of trouble sleeping. The only other thing I struggle with is my husband being gone on sea duty. He is currently on shore duty now after spending almost 2 out of the last three years underway so its getting better! yes
