Week 3 of pregnancy: The egg/sperm have
met and merged, and are traveling down the
fallopian tube. This is the week
implantation occurs. There is nothing to
see on ultrasound - nothing at all.
Week 4 of pregnancy: There is a
gestational sac and a yolk sac. The yolk
sac can sometimes be seen on ultrasound,
but that's it. This is also when you miss
your period and when a pregnancy test will
finally be positive.
If you had an ultrasound and they said you
were 4 weeks along, you would have only
just missed your period. Two weeks before
that, when you claim to have tested
positive, you would have been ovulating.
There is no possible way you could have
tested positive back then if you were 4
weeks along at your ultrasound. At two
weeks pregnant, there is no baby, and
therefore you can't possibly trigger a
positive pregnancy test.
Do you understand where the confusion is
coming from? You couldn't have gotten a
positive pregnancy test and then been 4
weeks along at your ultrasound. It simply
isn't possible.

There is a difference between “gestational
age” and “fetal
age“.
Gestational age is the most
common term and is, usually, counted from
the first day of your last menstrual
period, which is about 2 weeks* before
ovulation(when the egg is
released). After ovulation, the egg must be
fertilized by the sperm within the next 48
hours or it will disintegrate. So, conception would take place
between the release of the egg and the
next 48 hours.
*note: In reality, this time
greatly varies. Not every woman or every
cycle will release an egg 14 days after
the first day of the previous period.
Fetal
age is the actual age of the fetus
and is counted from the time of conception(when egg and sperm
unite).
Fetal
age is always 2 weeks less than
gestational age.
See the difference?
There is a time between conception and implantation where the woman
has conceived but cannot tell
because no hcg hormone is being released.
This hormone starts to release once the
egg implants in the uterine
wall(this happens 6-12 days after ovulation).
Very sensitive hpt’s can detect the hcg
hormone as early as 3 days after the
embryo implants in the uterus. This
means that as early as 9 days after conception a woman could get
a positive hpt.
If her due date is August 22nd, conception would have
occurred around November 30th. If she got
a positive hpt on December 9th, then that
would be 9 days after conception and it would be
possible to get a true positive.
Two weeks later would be a little more
than 3 weeks after conception and the fetal age
would be 3 weeks. However, gestational
age would be 2 weeks more making
her a little over 5 weeks.
Maybe the ultrasound tech who said this
meant she conceived 3-4 weeks ago???
That would make her 5-6 weeks gestation
at the time of the first ultrasound. Every
embryo develops differently and at
different rates.
Conclusion, the given due date is correct
based on the given dates of the first
positive pregnancy test.

then the heartbeat would be detectable
then and they wouldnt tell her that.

The heart begins to beat 22 days after
conception/fertilization. If fertilization
occured 9 days before the test and the
ultrasound was done 14 days after the
test, that would make the fetal age 23
days when the ultrasound was performed.
Detecting a heartbeat the day after it
started would be very rare and difficult.
At this time, the embryo would be the size
of the period at the end of my sentence
and the heart even smaller.
I would like to correct myself...

then if you go by that logic she would be
23 weeks right now..not 25.

I wonder how she'd have tested postive 2
weeks prior to the ultrasound that dated
her pregnancy at 3-4 weeks.

Thing is though, they COULDN'T accurately
date a pregnancy 3-4 weeks gestation
because there is NOTHING to be found. That
would put the fetal age at 1-2 weeks and
then it is still just a group of cells.
And if NOTHING is found, how can you date
it?

Yes, the fetal age would be 23 weeks but
she would be 25 weeks gestation.

If you are 24.5 weeks, your due date would
be August 29, that pushes your EDD out
another week. Which would correlate with
the early ultrasound dating. However, that
would put your conception date at December
7th. Which would mean you could not have
tested positive on December 9th or 10th.
Even with a blood test.

There's a big difference between a due
date of August 15th(based on you period)
and August 29th(what it sounds like your
OB is going by).
They shouldn't go by measurements taken
later in pregnancy to give you a due date.
After the 1st trimester, not just age
affects the size of the fetus. Genetics,
maternal health, uterine conditions,
nutrition, life style, elevation and other
factors also play a role now. Measurements
taken during the first 12 weeks will give
a more accurate due date. Did you have any
other ultrasounds before 12 weeks?

...she said at my first OB visit, last
Tuesday, that my due date has changed to
Aug.22nd. And that i would be 24weeks [and
not 25 like i thought.]
We charted from when i was ovulating,
around the 23rd and that is how she got
the due date at Aug.22nd.
I guess it would make more sense if i had
the wheel visable for everyone to see.
And i agree, there is no way i would have
had an acurate reading from a test and
blood test is i concieved on the 7th.
This is confusing now.
Why am i being told so many different
things if there's something wrong with it
all the time? If the baby was now
developing right i would have been aware
of it...

QUESTION: Dear Ms Ultrasound,
I can't remember the day of my last period
so trying to figure out my conception date
has been pretty hard for me. I just know
that it was some time in November. My
period had been irregular for about 2
months because I had just gotten off the
pill. When I had an ultrasound back in
March 23, 2004 after measuring the baby
and everything I was told that I was 18
weeks pregnant and my due date was August
24, 2004 is that correct? When would my
date of conception be then?
ANSWER: This is how a pregnancy is
dated.... The medical community uses a 28
day cycle to figure out when conception
happens. It is assumed that your period is
day 1 and conception happens on day 14.
This is for the average woman who has
regular periods.
Having an ultrasound at 18 weeks would
mean that the average woman would have
conceived 16 weeks ago, not the 18 that
most people think. The number of weeks
starts from the first day of your last
period, so on the day of conception, which
is commonly about day 14, you are
considered 2 weeks pregnant. (I know it's
confusing.)
So, if you want to figure about when you
got pregnant, count back to day 14 or week
2 and that will most likely be conception.
From a March 23rd, 18 week ultrasound and
a due date of August 24th, the chart we
use shows a probable conception date of
December 1.
Hope I haven't confused you too much! If
you have any more questions just let me
know.

Oh, you don't need a wheel. You can use
this.

I thought you were just spotting on the
8th. You had said your period wasn't due
until the 13th or the 15th or something.

i thought it was spotting, but it was my
period.
I was spotting when i had thought i was
6weeks. and that was why i went to the
doctor to see if everything is ok and that
was when they sent me for an u/s and that
was when i found out that i was actually
more like 3-4 weeks -because they could
not see anything but said my uterus looks
good- instead of 6weeks.
