hello, i am 27yrs african woman, married
with no kids. I have been experience
strange periods for a few years now. a few
days after my 5 day period cycle, i get a
clear flow that lasts for about a week or
more. usually happens at night while
asleep sometimes in the day but usually in
the night. this happens every month after
i get my period. My husband and i do not
use contraceptives and i dont know if i
have ever been pregnant. I feel that i
could of conceived long time time since we
dont use anything, also the problem could
be linked to me not conceiving. i am not
sure. could some one help me, i am tired
of this , like a thorn in my flesh.

Discharge is normal as long as its not
smelly or a different color
If you want advice on conceiving then you
may want to try the Getting Pregnant
forums
They'll be able to help you out a little
more.
Good luck!

Dr. Nikola, its a clear heavy discharge
mostly at night. no particular foul smell.
I remember some years ago at work, all of
a sudden a heavy flow came down as if a
pregnant woman water bag burst. Was really
embarrasing, had to literally run home.
Please help. I went to a doctor who said
that was normal when starting sexual
activity, but its been years now. I really
feel something is wrong. I have not been
trying to conceive, but my point was that
we don't use contraception, so far no
unexpected pregnancy then.

I remember noticing that, too, in my mid
20's. I'm in my early 30's now. I think
perhaps you might be experiencing signs
that you are ovulating. Cervical mucus
can drop (it's clear and thick mucus)
during ovulation. I was scared it was an
STD! Thankfully, a nurse explained to me
that it was natural and that I was getting
more in touch with my body.
If your menstrual period is regular and
you can predict when it's coming ... count
backwards from the day that it's due to
arrive. Most women ovulate 14 days before
the FIRST day of their next period. If
the discharge is in synch with that, it's
a good predictor of ovulation.
I agree with you that your vaginal
discharge is somehow unusual but there are
no indications that that discharge can be
related with eventual sterility problem
(at least for now). You can do a
gynecological examination, PAP-test,
microbiological vaginal smear and
ultrasound scan to put some light on it.
At your age (27) if you have regular
unprotected sex you should conceive in a
year.
