frost nip or frost bite symptoms ? Posted: 03-24-08 09:35am
I spent a week in scotland in the
mountains. The night temp falling to -10C
at night. Being an ultralight backpaker i
decided to take my summer sleeping bag
instead of my down one, saving 1kg.
Assuming if i wore ots of warm cothes i'd
be alright. I slept fine but once i woke
up i noticed my feet were frozen solid.
I warmed them up and they turned pink and
white striped and my skin went all wrinkly
as if it were very wet. i spent the week
climbing don't know if that was the best
think to do, but i didn't have any
problems.
But know my skin has gone a slightly
greyish color it's not really noticable
until i compare it with my hands and after
having a bath alot my skin has become very
flaky, and is peeling of.

This might sound weird, but you probably
are experiencing a minor burn. Every
heard of freezer burn? When a chicken
breast gets freezer burn, it turns gray
when thawed. This is because the outer
layers are damaged, dead and no longer
usable. Well, when your skin reached a
temperature it could not tolerate, your
feet went numb, and then the cells began
to died. It's a good thing you warmed
them up when you did, because frost bite
might have been the next step. Just like
any burn (sunburn, etc..) the dead,
damaged cells are peeling off. I would
have it checked out by a doctor, just for
good measure. But unless the skin is
turning a drastic color (black, green, or
bright white) I think you can rule out
frost bite. Be careful next time! You've
only got 2 feet!
