getting birth control confidentially ? Posted: 06-26-08 09:48am
My parents are TOTALLY against birth
control, but I feel like I should have it
just to be safe in case anything does
happen. There is no way I could ever talk
to them about getting birth control. So I
made an appointment at Planned Parenthood
to get an exam in order to get birth
control. I thought this would be
confidential, however, one of my friends
who went to Planned Parenthood to get the
Plan B pill ended up getting a letter from
Planned Parenthood in the mail because she
filled out the form with her address on
it. Is there anyway I can prevent planned
parenthood from sending anything to my
house? Also, they said all I needed to
bring was proof of insurance...will I need
to pay up front for any other fees when I
go to my appointment or will my insurance
cover it?
Thanks!

If you talk to Planned Parenthood about
confidentiality, you will be fine. If
they call you, they will use code names
like it's "sally" or "bill" or something
similar so your parents don't know if they
answer.
Also, just as a warning, if you use an
insurance that your parents use too,
chances are it is going to be written on
your insurance bill.
Perhaps to avoid an awkward encounter you
could tell your mom that your periods are
really heavy, irregular, and painful and
you would like to get on the pill because
it makes your period more regular and less
painful. She doesn't have to know the
real reason why.
Good for you for wanting to be protected,
though. That is wonderful

IF you do not want to use your parents
insurance, explain to PP that your parents
will not allow you to use birth control,
and you need a special discount for
teens.
MANY PP offer free and special low cost
services for teens.
Explain everything to them, and they
should be able to have everything taken
care of.
