Hi there, I have been on birth control for
about 2 years. I am currently taking
trycyclen lo, and i have a bit of a
problem. I am going on vacation next week
and that is when my period is supposed to
be. So I stopped taking pills this week,
figuring that I will get my period
earlier. Then this upcoming sunday, i was
going to take a week of my pills. Will
this work, or will I still get my period
next week.
What should I do?
The usual procedure for skipping some
regular period is to throw away the
inactive ("placebo" pills) and continue
with the active pills from a new pack when
the time for the regular period comes. In
case of Tri-cyclen Lo you should continue
with the third week pills. When finish
those 7 active pills you can either make a
7-days pause (if you only want to delay
the period for 7 days) or continue with a
new pack (if you want to skip the period
completely). There is no guarantee that
this will always work because unexpected
bleeding can happen.
Your plan to provoke earlier period may
work too but I believe that the chances
for unexpected bleeding are bigger.

So... this isn't the proper procedure for
skipping your period, girl!! You can't
just stop taking the pills whenever you
want!! You can always take extra pills,
but you can't take less than the three
weeks because then you might get pregnant.
Especially on tricyclen, because you're
skipping a whole hormone level. NOT COOL!
Not taking the full 21 days of active
pills risks your protection from
pregnancy. If you have sex, you will have
to use backup protection until you have
taken seven more active pills.
In the future, if you want to skip your
period, don't try make it come earlier.
That is really pointless. Simply skip it
by skipping the placebo week and starting
immediately on your next pack of pills.
You might have some breakthrough bleeding
or spotting the first time you try this,
and it usually works better with time.
