hair dryer while pregnant Posted: 05-09-08 02:57am
I am 20 weeks pregnant today. I went to
the salon 4 days ago to re-touch and set
my hair. I felt funny movements while
under the dryer. I had to get out almost
immediately. Could it be that my baby was
also feeling the heat? The movement lasted
all thru i was under the dryer. Should i
avoid the hair dryer now.

No, there is no reason why you can't be
under a hair dryer. It's perfectly safe.
Looks like your baby is a really active
one and he was just waking up because you
weren't rocking him to sleep by your
movement.
Hot showers increase your body temperature
and can cause problems with the baby's
brain development. It is easier to have
your body temperature up to an
uncomfortable level when it is wet than
when it is dry heat...imagine what it
would be like taking a walk in 120 degrees
like the temperature people take their
showers in. You just couldn't do that.
If you yourself were feeling too warm or
uncomfortable under the dryer, then that
would mean your are too hot. Just trust
your own reflexes.
The main thing I'd be worried about more
than the heat here is the chemical
treatment that you might have had. It's
recommended to stay out of salons for
treatments during pregnancy. There isn't
enough evidence that it does actually harm
the baby, but most stylist won't accept
pregnant moms for hair treatments until
after the baby is born.

I am 23 weeks along and I was in the bath
the other day and we have a bubble machine
that makes the water bubble kind of like a
sauna. I turned it on and the baby jumped,
kicked and threw a fit. I turned it off
and the baby stopped moving. I turned it
back on and the started moving again. I
think the noise and motion of the bubles
was just a new expirience for her and she
got startled. The baby's since of motion
and hearing are developing more now, so
she is just getting used to all this
stuff. Still, I opted out of the bubbles.
They were nice, but I don't want to
startle the baby if I can avoid it.
