Herpes or Yaz side effect ? Posted: 06-24-08 12:33pm
My girl has been on YAZ for a few months
now, and the past month or two she's had a
major irritation inside her vagina, more
notable during sex and while wiping. It's
become dry a few times, and very
irritated. She claims its like a burning
sensation and has ruined sex for her more
than once as a result.
She went to the Dr who said it looked
irritated who put her on a medicine for a
bacterial infection which she's had before
(mainly when she was taking anti-biotics).
She thought the problem got better with
the medicine, but after a week or so when
we gave sex a go again, she still had the
burning pain. This has lasted about a
month or so.
She went back and had an STD test. The
swab or sample of the irritated area
showed no signs of anything, although a
blood test showed signs of Herpes 1
antibodies. She has in the past 6 months
had a cold sore on her mouth, which to my
understanding would cause those antibodies
to show up anyway. But the Dr is putting
her on VALTREX to see if by chance it
clears the problem down there.
My questions to you ladies are:
1. Have any of you had this side affect
from YAZ? I've read that some people
reporting definate dryness as a side
affect, but not irritation that burned
from what I've seen.
2. Wouldnt a direct test from the
irritated area show positive of the STD if
it was HERPES 1 in that area or something
else?
3. Wouldnt her blood tests show positive
for Herpes 1 if she has had cold sores on
her lip in the past 5 months?
Thanks...
Worried...

I have never been on yaz and I dont know
anyone who has. So I really do not know
the answer to Question #1.
#2. A direct test of the irritated area
(culture/swab)can come back negative even
when the person is positive. There are
false negatives. A blood test is the 100%
way to know. I know for a fact this applys
to testing for herpes. But I am not sure
about other STD's. I tested negative with
a culture of a sore, but blood work
revealed I had herpes.
#3. The blood tests taken should show
herpes 1 or 2 regardless of an active
outbreak. Once the virus is your body its
there to stay. You can test positive
without any signs or symptoms. So if she
had a cold sore that was herpes1 it should
have come up in her blood. From what I
understand there are different types of
cold sores unrelated to herpes1. Kids get
them all the time.
I would definately speak to a doctor to
get all of your questions answered. There
is also a herpes hotline and a herpes
website thats extremely helpful. The
hotline includes nurses on site to help
with any questions.

Herpes presents itself as BLISTERS
normally on the OUTSIDE of the vagina.
If she has had a cold sore on her mouth,
that would most assuredly be the reason
for a positive herpes test.
It could be an allergy to soaps or
perfumes that she uses below, or a change
in activity.
It does not sound like genital herpes.

If indeed it was...how long would it last
normally? She has no sores, no open
sores.
If she started Valtrex, how long would it
take to clear up? They basically had her
take it just to see if it would affect the
problem down there. The fact that she's
had cold sores her whole life on and off,
and had one in less than 6 months would
lead one to believe she'd test positive on
the blood test regardless of whats going
on below. I just wish we could get a
definate answer Yes or No if thats the
other problem also...

It can take 1 week for it to start to
clear up IF It was herpes.
I really doubt it is... Herpes IS open
sores and blisters..
