I had blood tests done a couple of month
ago about 2 weeks after my period. When I
went to see the doctor today about it, she
told me that the male hormone (I think she
said testosterone, but not 100%
sure....are there any other male
hormones?) was a little high but because
it was 2 weeks after my period it could be
normal. So she took more blood again
today (2 days after the start of my
period) and wants me to get another blood
test 3 days before my next period to
determine if my male hormone level is too
high. Right now I'm on the pill so I can
determine when me periods are. But
normally I'm very irregular. I started my
period when I was 12 and have never been
regular. There would be times where there
would be 2 weeks in between each one and
other times there would be like 3 months
in between each one. Sometimes they would
last 2 days other times they'd last 2
weeks. The doctor tells me that if the
male hormone is higher than normal, that
could also be the cause of my thinning
hair (and hair loss), and my metabolism
could be off which could be why it's hard
for me to lose weight.
Anyone else hear of this or have this
problem? If so, are there treatments?

Do you remember them saying exactly what
you had?
Was the hormone by chance androgen?

I don't remember exactly. It could have
been androgen. All I do remember is that
it was a male hormone. What is androgen?
What's the difference between that and
testosterone?

If it helps, my Lab Requisition that I
have to bring to my next blood test says
to test for DHEAS. I've been reading that
women going through menopause usually get
higher male hormones. But I'm only 27. I
would just like to know what kind of
treatments there are to make it better and
would that regulate my periods more and
let my hair grow in thicker?

That's what I was thinking, but then I
don't really know much about PCOS-- just
some of the symptoms.
Wow. That seems a little scary. I have
had tests done a few months ago but
nothing came out of those ones. I was
tested for Glucose, HbA1C, TSH,
Creatinine, Sodium, Potassium, Chloride,
ALT, Alk. Phosphatase, Lipid Assessment,
Echocardiography, 24 Hour blood pressure
monitor, and ultrasound of the heart. All
those came back normal. It was the single
blood test that I had when all those
results came back that showed a slightly
high androgen (I think) hormone. She said
if it had been taken a few days before my
period, it would have been a normal
reading, and if it was taken during my
period it would be considered too high.
But because it was taken almost right in
between it was hard to say. I am happy to
say I don't have any extra facial or body
hair and the test results came back saying
I don't have diabetes nor did my
ultrasound show anything on my ovaries.
But I guess I'll have to wait a month to
find out. What really frustrates is my
last doctor told me it's normal for some
women to be irregular and that it's
nothing to worry about until I start
trying to have children and seem to be
unsuccessful. I'd rather kick this in the
butt now so that after my wedding next
year I don't have problems trying to
conceive. I love my new doctor. It's a
female and fresh out of med school. My
last doctor was old and a male.

The thing about pcos is that it's hard to
diagnose- it's more just a cluster of
symptoms than anything else. And it's hard
to treat as well, usually they suggest
birth control to regulate your cycle and
regular exercise to work on your
metabolism and help with the weight issue.
(These are things you might want to think
about anyway, since it sounds like it
might make your life a little easier:))
I see they tested your TSH, that's good.
You might want to get your iron levels
checked too, that can be a simple problem
that affects your energy levels and would
make your hair thin. That's another really
easy blood test, and low iron is really
common and easy to fix with diet changes
or supplements.
Just a thought

Well, I am on the birth control pill. I
went on it in 1998 (when I was 1 only to regulate my
periods. It works. I went off the pill
for a couple of years when I was 23 and
have been on it again since 2005. I'm
planning on going off it after my wedding
in June next year (my wedding is planned
around my period right now). But I'm
concerned that when I'm ready to try to
get pregnant that it'll be hard and I may
have problems. My iron level is ok
because I donate blood on a regular basis
and never have any problems. They don't
allow you to donate blood if your iron is
low.
As frustrating as it is, I guess I'll just
have to wait a month to find out.
