Horror stories from work

I got a new job! yes

Of course, that means quitting my current job. Although I've never quit a job before, I assumed it wasn't going to be a big problem because I had only been working two months. But somehow I always manage to turn something simple into a huge ordeal. I took my manager into the back and handed him my two weeks’ notice and explained that I was offered a job somewhere else- just as I had planned to do ahead of time.

But my manager didn't simply take the letter and leave it at that like he had done in my plans. Nope, instead he started crying...

I don't know if I just caught him at a bad time or what, but the second his face got red and he started pacing saying, "Oh my god, I knew it.. I knew it..." then I panicked and went into every single possible reason I needed to take this job and more apologies than I ever thought I'd say in 10 minutes. I almost started crying myself (I can't watch people cry, it makes my eyes water). He left the room -- didn't even take my letter -- and by the time I was able to leave the office (I was waiting for change) all I saw was my manager talking to another coworker, who was patting him on the back and telling him to hang in there. Then my manager bolted to the bathroom. This coworker now refers to me as, "Girl-Who-Made-Chuck-Cry" since he was apparently in the office when I quit, so he knew it was me. All in all, not how I though quitting my first job would go.

Please, someone share some horror stories from work so I can feel a little bit better about making a grown man cry. Sad

Hugs!! I'm sorry hun. If it makes you feel any better, quitting my first job was a horror story too. I worked at a daycare for two years. I pretty much gave them 2 months notice!! I told them I was going to be leaving in August because I was moving 2 hours away to go to college and would no longer be able to work there. I reminded them multiple times. All of a sudden, mid-August they put out the September schedule and I'm scheduled to work 3 times a week. Uh oh. I bring it up with the manager saying that I had been scheduled to quit at the end of August for months and months because of school. She started SCREAMING at me, saying she didn't know and blah blah blah. I told her that I had even sent her an email about it and she wrote back to the email agreeing that I will be leaving in the end of August. She got really flustered and told me that if I don't find someone to cover my shifts that I'll be fired instead of labeled as quitting. Ugh. Thankfully I was able to find people to cover my shifts for September, but it was a huge mess and unbelievable since I gave so much notice.

Yeah, I stopped feeling bad after I found out he scheduled me every day until my last day... I told him I'd help out during the transition but that I was planning on starting at the new job asap. Instead he gave me 12 hours more than normal. Whats with that?

Anyone else have any stories?

I got one for you... I got fired because my mother died. I got the call about a month ago that she was in the hospital and wasn't gonna make it. So I had to fly to Massachussetts. I called my work right away and told them I had to take some time off for a family emergency. I said I didn't know when I'd be back, and I'd call as soon as I knew. So I flew out that night, they took her off life support the next day, but she held on for another week. Needless to say it wasn't really on my mind to call my work just to tell them I didn't know when I'd be back... as I was sleeping on waiting room couches and watching my mother die. But as soon as she went and all the arrangements were made and I booked my flight back I called my job to let them know when I'd be back. That's when they told me I'd been terminated for job abandonment. They just assumed I walked off the job.... even when I told them I had to take some time off. So when I finally got back into town I went down there to talk to them. After I waited over an hour for the manager to get in, he wouldn't even give me the time of day. Just said there was nothing he could do and he couldn't tell me anything. I've been with the company for 2 1/2 years, and have always been reliable, and the one time I have to leave for a legitimate reason, that's how they repay me. But that's corporate America for you...

how about finding out you're fired when they just plain stop scheduling you? That was my first job... I never met my boss, I was always shuffled from department to department (in a department store) and finally just didn't find my name on the schedule anymore.

Other than that, all my experiences with leaving have been great Smile

I have only had to give notice once. But they knew it would be coming. I had taken the job as a part time job (Pizza Ranch) and I was working another part time job (pharmacy). They knew when I could I would start full time at the other job. Well had problems with the other Tech in the pharmacy (she had been there 15 years). She basically didn't like another women in "her space". My boss had had problems with her before but is way to nice to get rid of her. But one day I walked in from lunch and he informed me that he fired her! I was holy sh**! So then I was working both jobs. I would go to the pharmacy in the am go to the pizza ranch 1030-230 and back to the pharmacy until 530. Well on top of it all I found out I was pregnant with my son (which i was on bc). I couldn't handle it all and had to give notice I gave them about a month a the pizza ranch but she cried and said she wished I could stay blah blah blah but she understood. Later the asst manager left and they asked me if I would consider that job. But I had a great job at the pharmacy! Still do and I really like it! So it all turned out! Smile But I'll tell you what it really sucks when someone makes your day hell and you didn't even do anything to them except take a job!
