incomplete abortion with cytotec ? Posted: 05-21-08 19:54pm
Like so many others here, I need
help/advice/opinions.
My story. briefly: I had a spontaneous
miscarriage 1.5 yrs ago (planned
pregnancy), but it was incomplete. Afraid
of surgery, I opted to wait to see if it
would pass naturally, but my doctor game
me cytotec to hurry it along if i so
chose. It passed naturally.
Just over 2 wks ago, my partner freaked
out, became violent and then tried to kill
himself. He is no longer in the picture,
but I found out 3 days ago I am pregnant
(I conceived on the 6th of May, so 4 weeks
LMP/2wks gestational). I am now a single
mom with 2 children and broke as hell, and
this is the last thing I can handle right
now. I live in a small town, so I called
the abortion clinic in a nearby city and
set up the appointment. I was informed it
would cost me $650 for a medical abortion
(which is the route I MUST go since no one
can know about this but me) and I have to
wait until I am at least 6wks along. I
can't afford $650 and want the pregnancy
ended now for my emotional well-being.
So, being ever so bright, I decided to use
the cytotec the doctor had given me 1.5
yrs ago. Yesterday I put a couple of
drops of water on 800mcg and inserted it
vaginally. Within 30 minutes I had cold
chills and cramps and severe diarrhea, but
no bleeding. About 10 hours later I had
some bright red bleeding (not a lot).
Today nothing except a little bit of brown
spotting. I realize it is, at best,
incomplete. But what I fear is that I
didn't succeed at all and I still have a
living embryo inside me. I can go to my
doctor and let insurance pay IF it
aborted. If it didn't, then I am going to
have to come up with $650 somehow and be
an emotional wreck for over 2 weeks.
Any information, advice, or even an
educated guess would be sincerely
appreciated.

Want to update my post for others who
might need/want this information.
The protocol for finding out if the
pregnancy is still viable in my
circumstances (~4weeks LMP/2weeks
gestational) is through blood tests that
check hormone levels. Blood is taken at
48 hour intervals. If the pregnancy
hormone levels have not doubled in that
time, then the pregnancy is no longer
viable. It is not possible to see
ANYTHING on an ultrasound until 6weeks
LMP, so there is no quick answer with a
very early pregnancy.
I got blood drawn and measured yesterday
morning. I will get blood drawn again
tomorrow morning, so I should have my
answer by tomorrow afternoon.
Well, the pregnancy terminated. My HcG
levels dropped drastically in 48 hours.
So, the reduced dose of Cytotec worked,
but I still have not passed any tissue and
have, in fact, had no further bleeding
even. At least my insurance will pay some
on any treatment I need to complete the
process, and no one knows that I aborted.
I hope this information is helpful to
someone even though this was a terrible,
desperate plan, and I wouldn't recommend
it to anyone who can manage better for
themselves.
My thoughts are with anyone who has to
make a decision on whether or not to
abort. It is not an easy place to be. I
wish you the best.
