Irregular Period with birth control. Posted: 07-15-08 20:21pm
Ok. Wherrre should I start.
Well. First off. A little medical history.
Most girls start their period at about.. 9
or 10 or maybe 11, I was told. I didn't
get mine until the summer after I had
turned 16. I had my first period and after
that week was over, I didn't have one
until about 3 months later. In that time,
I hadn't had sex so I knew it wasn't
pregnancy. My mom went through the same
thing. She was a late bloomer and had
always had irregular periods. But she also
had and still has Hyperthyroidism
[Misspell.], which I think had a major
part to do with it . For me at about age
18 after having 2 years of irregular
periods, My Gyno decided to put me on
birth control to help regulate my periods.
For a good steady 3 months of taking them,
my period was almost regular but still
acted funny. When I turned 19, I lost my
insurance with my mom and couldn't afford
$60 pills every month. So I stopped taking
them and in that time I was having sex
with my boyfriend but we were very safe
about it. Just 2 months ago, I started a
new birthcontrol[Ortho.28 day cycle] I've
been on it for 2 months now. About to
start my 3rd pack. On my first pack, I was
still late on my period. I freaked out and
thought I was pregnant, mainly because me
and my boyfriend were having unprotected
sex. Yes. Very irresponsible. I started 3
days after I started the sugar pills.
Well. This month. I'm on the 3rd sugar
pill for the month and I still haven't had
a period. I'm already worried again that I
might be pregnant. But I think to myself
that, since my mom has Hyperthyroidism,
that I may be developing it because it can
be passed down from parent to child. Or
because of my new job, I'm very stressed
out all the time and really, I'm a very
emotional person and get worked up over
simple stuff. Orrr. That because I'm on a
new birthcontrol, my body is still not
used to it all and with the combination
family genes, stress and whatever else
there is, My period won't start. I've also
read that if you take your birthcontrol
religiously every day, you will have
almost 100% chance of NOT getting
pregnant. I know me and my boyfriend
should use protection but the past couple
of times we have had sex, we haven't used
a condom and he hasn't pulled out. I
really don't know what to do except take a
test but I just want to hear what other
people think.
I don't know if I should wait until the
end of the month or just take a test now
and get it over with.

If you're taking your birth control
correctly, you don't really need to wear a
condom as long as std's aren't a concern.
Some people don't start their period until
partway through their placebo week (the
3rd pill or so) and that's completely
normal.
Also, the pill will most likely make your
period lighter over time or even stop
completely.
It might take about 3 months for your body
to be fully adjusted to the pill and your
cycle to be settled.
Please get your thyroid tested, it's a
really quick blood test and might save you
a lot of trouble.
You can take a test now if it will make
you feel better, but unless you've been
missing pills or throwing up a lot,
there's not really a reason to think
you're pregnant.

I understand that it takes maybe 2 packs
or 3 to get adjusted but I can't help but
freak out. It's Day 4 of my sugar pills
and still no period and I have stopped
cramping. Around Monday and Tuesday of
last week, I was actually cramping a lot,
like I do right before I start my period
and then all of a sudden, it stopped.
I'm wondering. I take my pill every day
and I have only missed a pill once since I
have been on Birthcontrol and that was
last month some time. But since then, I
have had my period. Now, I have been
taking my pill every day since then but
sometimes, not at the same exact time as I
did the day before. Can that mess up the
cycle and cause a window for my body to be
prone to getting pregnant? How important
is it that you take the pill every day at
the same exact time every time?

For regular monophasic combined hormone
pills (like you're on, right?) it's not
really that imperative that it's at the
same time every day. You can be off by a
few hours and you'll be fine.
If you miss one pill, you are still
protected. You should take it as soon as
you remember and continue your schedule as
usual. (But since you had a period since
then, it doesn't matter anyway)

Yay!!
I know how you feel. For a while I was on
birth control that made me never get my
period at all. I took so many pregnancy
tests during that time....

I have another question about birth
control.
Saturday was the last sugar pill in my
pack and I switched to my new pack which
started with a hormone pill on Sunday.
Well, I was still spotting on Sunday and
decided to leave a tampon in, just in
case. Well that night before I got in bed,
I went to change my tampon and discoverd
that I had stopped bleeding. So I left the
tampon out. Me and my boyfriend had sex
and afterwards, we found a little blood,
not much.
Should I be worried at all about.. ya
know?
Is it safe to have sex when you are still
bleeding, even if it's just a little.
Almost like spotting?
Or since I started my new pack of pills
and took my first hormone pill of said
pack, I'm alright.
Is it even safe at all to have sex during
your period when you are taking the sugar
pills?

Yes, you are protected during your sugar
week.
You can have sex on your period, there is
nothing wrong with that- you are still
protected from pregnancy, and there's no
health risks or anything like that.
As long as you only take one week of sugar
pills, if you ever take more than that
for some reason, you are no longer
protected.

Alright.
That's good.
I feel a little clueless and
irresponsible.
I guess there is no better time then now
to learn all about BC and whatnot.
You have been so much help.
I'll for sure post in here again.
I've got a few more questions, just can't
think of them at the moment.
Thanks again.
