IUD after pregnancy Posted: 06-10-08 15:30pm
Hy Ladies!
How soon after birth can you get an IUD.
Preferably the copper non-normonal one?
This and condoms are the only forms of
birth control that I can take. I cant
stand condoms, they just feel nasty and
body cant have hormonal b/c. My widwife
said that our next appt we would discuss
b/c after baby, and my appt is Friday.
Has anyone else gotten the IUD right after
having a baby? If so how long do you have
to wait to have it put in? How did it work
for you? It shouldnt interfere with
breastfeeding right?
IUD is contraindicated to be put right
after delivery. You can insert IUD 4 weeks
after delivery if there aren't any
post-delivery complications like
infections or bleeding.
IUD does not interfere with breastfeeding.

Rosie,
I got the IUD, Mirena, after my pregnancy.
I had to wait until I had a period, which
was around 6 weeks after birth. It has to
be inserted while you are on your period
for some reason.
It's a little bit painful, so I would
recommend that you take some tylenol right
before your appointment.

mmm really? I didnt know you had to wait
for your period. I am going to breastfeed
so hopefully that doesnt stop my period
from coming and stop me from getting birth
control. I do not want two babies back to
back !!
Thanks for all the input. I will see what
my midwife says on Friday.

I'm sure that if you are breastfeeding,
they won't have to wait for a period. It
probably depends on the doctor too. Some
will insert them into women who have never
had children when they recommend Mirena
for mothers.
