My 32 year old daughter was diagnosed with
melanoma 2 years ago and has periodically
had cancerous growths removed.She visits
her dermatologist every other month for a
check up.Shoud she be more agressive in
her treatments? Should she be visiting a
cancer center or cancer hospitals? What is
the long term survival rate for her?

What stage was her melanoma lesion?
Do you know the thickness of melanoma?

She is in stage 1 and the current biopsy
is 1" deep and 4" across on her lower
back.We will know this week if they got
all of the cancerous tissue.
Thank you for your reply.

Stage 1 melanoma are lesions that are
thinner than 2.0mm or less than 1.0mm
thick.
All the treatment that is needed, is a
removal with a wide local excision (an
early melanoma, with no spread to the
lymph nodes or any other part of the body,
it is highly likely that simply removing
it will cure the patient).
One of the main factors affecting survival
for people with melanoma is the thickness
of the tumor when it is diagnosed.
Melanoma that is thinner than 1.5mm, is
related with 5 years survival for 96% of
patients, and after 5 years of diagnosis
and treatment there is only a small chance
that melanoma will come back.
Your daughter needs to avoid sun bathe,
wear sun screen and covering clothes.
She needs to watch and check for any
changes in other moles, any dark mole-like
spots appearing near where the mole was
removed and any enlarged glands (lymph
nodes) near to where she had the mole
removed (if she notice something like this
she can arrange an extra check up).
