Q: Memory Loss during Pregnancy

Hi Im 20 years old, pregnant with my 2nd child after 3 years of having a healthy pregnancy/baby. With my 1st pergnancy I experienced no symptoms, no morning sickness, no breast tendernous(although they got bigger), no pains, nothing! With this pregnancy its a new father and a whole different story. I have every symptom in the book including UTI's(urinary tract infections). I am now 11 weeks and found my newest problem/symptom...Memory loss. I always give my daughter who is now 3 1/2 a bath at nigh, I add the bubbles to the water let it run for a couple minutes, come back and shut off the water and let her play before I wash her. Well I was letting the water fill up and I was in the next room and I just completely blocked out the sound and everything and forgot she was even in there, until I hear say, mommy, come here. and I tread across wet carpet before I make it into the flooded hallway and bathroom. Now my boyfriend thinks Im some carless person who just is clumsy, because I am usually....but I've never done this before, ever! Is it normal to just forget such a vital thing as water running. How can I explain it to my boyfriend so he won't blame me or get angry?

Confused and Lost,
Jamie

Hi Jamie,

Don't worry! This sounds completely normal. A one-time episode is totally forgiveable. If you continue to have moments of forgetfulness, then you might want to consult a neurologist...but forgetting the bathwater is porbably more a consequence of multi-tasking than memory problems. IF you want to prevent it from happening again, I suggest that you SIT BESIDE THE TUB while the water if filling. Can't go wrong there! Give it your full, 100% attention, and it will get done correctly.

Hi thanks for the reply! Yea I sometimes sit besides the tub if I know I'm going to be busy right away, but I was just having a conversation about shoes with my boyfriends sister and I forgot. I keep forgetting small things too like what I'm doing, while I'm doing it. I mean it goes away right away, and its nothing severe but the consequences seem to be. The only room in the house with carpet is my boyfriends and ours, which happens to be right next to the bathroom, and its still wet as of today, I've used several towels, I tried drying it with a heater, I have the windows open today hoping to get all the moisture out. Any ideas on how to dry carpet? Lol. I was just doing laundry and I left the lid up on the washer and just walked away. I went to check the laundry only to find, its not being done obviously. Things like that, set me back while I'm trying to do things. Now I just feel guilty everytime my boyfriend walks in his room and his floors are wet.

Well I've never been pregnant and once again I stress that I'm no expert with symptoms, but let me tell you it sounds a lot like what's happened to me. The cause? Nothing Razz

I tell people that I'm already getting old (at 19, lol). Apparently it happened to my mother, too. She used to be a really sharp person, like I once was, but by the time she hit 30 she was practically senile (not medically, of course).

So yeah I think you're just changing a bit. And until it gets so bad that you can't remember how to get home, you don't have anything to worry about.

Memory loss during pregnancy is normal. Here is an article about it:

I'd post more, but I don't want it seen as advertising. A quick Google search will bring lots of links up!

I know what you are going through completely! I had the same problems with my first pregnancy, and this second one seems to be even a bit worse! I literally forget all the tiniest things, like where I last put my debit card, where my wallet is etc. I did the laundry thing too! But I actually do that several times a week, not just a one time thing for me at all LOL. I found my memory started to come back after I had had my son, but I got pregnant again when he was around 6 months old, so I never got to fully enjoy that "recovery" point LOL. I think with having another little one to do things with makes the forgetfulness ever more exaggerated as you have so many extra chores to tend to during the day. I caught myself trying to shove a jug of milk into the cupboard a week ago!! Man that was embarrassing! Anyways, don't feel alone, several of my friends are pregnant now too and we call it "baby brain". Good luck Very Happy
