i removed my nuva ring on the 11th March
and got my period on the 15th march....it
was a normal period. i didn't re insert
another nuvaring for that month, and on
the 13th April i got what i thought was
the start of my period - brown discharge,
this went on for 5 days, i inserted the
nuva ring on day 5, however it is now the
27th April and i still have a brown
discharge. it is a dark brown. i have had
it now for 16 days....i have been on the
nuva ring for around 10 months, this is
the first month break that i have had. i
have ALWAYS been regular, never missed a
period and had a 7 day period. this has
never ever happened before. i have only
ever missed a period when i was pregnant
with my son, and got it back when he was
around 8 weeks old (still Breastfeeding at
the time)
I did 4 tests and they came up negative.
maybe it was too early? mind you the
chances are slim as we used the withdrawal
method basically. I know that you can
still conceive this way. however i don't
believ

If we suppose that that “brown
discharge” is blood then it appears that
you have prolonged menstruation
(menorrhagia) or irregular uterine
bleeding (metrorrhagia). Reasons for this
menorrhagia or metrorrhagia could be
various including that manipulation with
the Nuvaring. The most important thing is
to exclude any organic reason for
bleeding: infection, tumor (benign or
malignant), endometriosis, etc. Systemic
reasons should be also excluded: thyroid
gland dysfunction, diabetes, coagulation
disorders, etc. If none of these disorders
is confirmed, a functional disorder is a
possible cause.
Several diagnostic procedures are
requested to find the reason for this
bleeding:
1. Clinical examination (bimanual
examination);
2. Blood analyses: blood count,
hemoglobin, hematocrit, T4, TSH,
prolactin, coagulation tests…;
3. Ultrasound scan;
4. PAP-test;
5. Pregnancy test;
6. Microbiological examinations for any
infections;
7. Hysteroscopy;
8. Endometrial biopsy, and
9. Curettage.
Vaginal bleeding is not a sign of
pregnancy but it can be caused by certain
pregnancy disorders so a pregnancy test
should also be requested. Those 4 negative
pregnancy tests excluded pregnancy.
You may want to consult your gynecologist
about this.
