I don't think mum would like to think she
has a mental illness, but after all these
years of the same thing I'm beginning to
think i should do something to find out
what is causing her outburst of attacks on
members of the family.

According to your description of your
mother’s behavior it seems to me that
your mother might have a mental disorder.
It is not acceptable to welcome her
daughter and her fiancé with such great
honor and then at the end to say “I
won’t come to your wedding” without a
valid reason. She may need attention but
the problem is how much and what kind of
attention she needs. Her life with your
father may not be good enough but children
(including you) can’t be guilty for
that. You can help your mother as much as
you can but you should have in mind that
you have your own life to carry on and you
should not allow your mother’s emotional
problems to interrupt your private life.
You may need to discuss all these issues
about your mother with your father before
asking for any medical attention.
