Hello,

Please do not feel ashamed of any incidents where you have made mistakes. Without knowing you well, I can only guess what is happening, but I believe that you are just becoming nervous. I suspect that you feel insecure when it takes you too long to count. Every single person in this world thinks at a different rate. Some people think very quickly, while others need a long time to get to the same place (and there are many in between). Neither way is right or wrong, it is just how it is. I know that I sometimes feel pressured to do math quickly, but that only makes me go slower because I have trouble focusing. Take the time that you need to succeed, and you will succeed 3:3! Do not let others get to you by laughter or asking you to go faster. There are many others like you, and it is proven through studies that stress and time limits affect a person's performance badly. I wish you the best of luck. You can definitely do it! Peace be with you always.

Hello again,

I cannot say whether or not you have a math learning disability. If you do have a learning disability (LD), there is still nothing wrong with you. An LD is diagnosed when a person scores outside of the standards. There must be some sort of standards for students to allow the teachers to reach the most number of students at one time. LD students will receive the help that they need to perform at the proper level. Like I said before, there is a range of ability in people. Whether you fall in the middle, slightly above average, or slightly below average, does not really matter because you are who you are. Human beings by nature are different, and as a pre-service teacher, I would never expect my students to perform, think, or do anything exactly the same. Please do not think that I am diagnosing you with an LD. I am just explaining it more. I cannot lean one way or another because that would be judging unjustly because of lack of information and knowledge.

How are you doing the math? Are you counting bills in your hand, doing mental math, and/or working out problems on paper? The best way to improve your skills is to practice. Make math problems for yourself and solve them. This may sound elementary, but you can use flashcards. If you want to succeed, you must work hard.

Here is a tip with math. Make the problems easier for you to solve. Let us take the example you used. 500 times 50=25,000. Take off all of the zeros (3). Multiply 5 times 5 (25). Then, add on the zeros that you took off (25,000). Another example is 45 times 30=1,350. If I had to do this in my head, here is how I would do it. 45 times 3 . . . 45 plus 45=90 . . . 100 plus 45=145 . . . take away 10=135 (I rounded 90 to 100 to make it easier.) . . . add on the zero I had removed=1,350.

That is just one way to do it. It may make things easier for some, and it may make things more difficult for others. Try to find methods that help you. There are many, many different methods that you probably did not learn in school. If mental math is really hard for you, write down the problem and solve it that way. There is no shame of doing that, if that is what you need to do to succeed. I suggest that you still practice mental math, though. I hope this is somewhat helpful. Peace to you.

Hello,

I just wanted to add that you can do anything, if you put your mind to it. You may never be a great mathematician, but how many can we have anyway? Math is not meant to be your strongest aspect, but you have other areas where you are strong. Everyone has a place in this world, and we are all different. That is why we all have different strengths and weaknesses. You will be just fine. If you find yourself not getting better at math, do not get discouraged. You do not need to be excellent at everything. You just need to be able to give to the world what you have and perform the job for which you are on Earth. Good luck! Peace to you.

I have trouble focusing and I am ADD/ADHD when I work I talk to my doctor about taking medication to help me focus better. Maybe you can talk to a doctor and see if you could take something to make you focus better on your work.

Good luck with this matter,

Hello again,

The only other advice that I can offer you is to take your time. When you want to answer on impulse, say to yourself, "Wait. Think about it first." Go your own pace. There is not much else I can say to help. Peace.
