I have read through a lot of the postings
relevant to recovery after a lumbar
microdiscectomy and yet I don't know for
sure if any of them exactly address my
concern. I had this operation two weeks
and one day ago. I have been recovering
very quickly and actually have returned to
work (my job is not physical). Normally I
am very active, run three to four times a
week and work out at home. I of course
have curtailed these things for the time
being until I recover enough and have been
cleared by my surgeon to resume my normal
exercise regimen. My initial problem was
sciatic pain down my left leg and that
pain is totally gone, however the past few
days I've been having aching on and off in
my right leg. The stiffness in my lower
back muscles I ascribe to normal healing
from the trauma and it's not very painful
just annoying. My main concern is over
whether or not the faint pains in my right
leg are normal during recovery. They are
IN NO WAY as severe as my sciatica prior
to surgery but they do get worse if I move
too quickly or sit for long periods. My
surgeon is out of his office for the next
few days and basically I am looking to see
if anyone else has had similar
experiences...

From the information given I would say
that you have suffered what is sometimes
called a chronic soft tissue injures to
the lumber spine, which could have been
present before the surgery. The surgery
could aggravate and bring about more
symptoms from this pre-existing problem.
Don't worry.I would agree that physical
therapy, intensive acupuncture, and
mobilization exercises can be helpful

jstooge, your experiences sound very
similar to mine. I was not as active as
you were prior to surgery as I had been in
severe pain for 5 years, unable to do much
of anything physical due to the lower back
pain and left leg sciatica. I had a fusion
10 years earlier and this was undoubtedly
an aggravation of that earlier
experience.
Anyway I had the endoscopic discectomy in
October (2007), felt great through
December - then it started to get painful.
It started out as just leg pain and was
told it was probably inflammation from the
surgery. A couple of facet joint
injections in December and February calmed
that down, and so I was feeling better
again. Then in early April the leg pain
was completely gone but now I was having
sharp lower back pain again. Well the next
several weeks were hell, trying everything
imaginable. It ended with about $10K out
of pocket and right back where I started.
Now I am waiting for my permanent pain
pump implant - something that had been
mentioned 1 years ago! Yes I tried the
spinal stimulator and it was not helpful
at all. All this runaround and this is
where it ends - I hope! The trial for the
pump was fantastic! Yes a lot of time and
money spent for nothing but at least I
have finally reached the end of this
cluster-@%$&!

I meant "10" years ago for when the pain
pump was first suggested. Oh how I wish I
could have traveled back though time - and
had it done then!
