10 Month Old Suddenly Waking at 2AM to Play.
Posted: 03-17-08 12:33pm

My 10-month old daughter has recently started waking up at 2am every night. She wakes up fully awake, smiling, and wanting to play. She shares a room with my 3 yr old, so I can't just let her cry it (or play it) out. I have been bringing her to my bed and it still takes me about 1 - 2 hrs to convince her to go back to sleep. Before this started, she was sleeping through the night for the most part. I put her down each night at 8:30pm after her bedtime routine and she wakes up at 7am on the dot, reguardless of how much sleep she gets.

Is this common? Any suggestions?

William used to do the same. I had to cut out one of his naps during the day and he slept throughout the night then

Hi, is your daughter walking yet or is she at that stage where she is maybe pulling up and starting to be interested in walking?

I ask this because alot of infants at the age where they begin to be interested in walking sometimes have a change in their sleep cycles..it appears that they want so much to practice this new 'thing' that it disrupts their normal sleep patterns.

It should die down eventually and get back to normal.

i would take away a nap (or shorten it) first... but you could move bed time up half an hour or so not a huge move, but its later none the less... and try to wear her out before bed... the more tirerd she is, the more she will want to sleep...
also, then she wakes up, bringing her to another room is probably a good idea because you dont want to disrupt the other child, but don't play with her.... if you play with her, she will think that it is acceptable to wake up and play in the middle of the night... try inputting your bedtime routine into trying to get her back to sleep... if you read to her as the last step, hold her and read to her.... thats what she's familliar with and associates it with time to sleep

Thanks for your responses. To Susie3827, you are right, she is pulling up and "cruising". When she wakes up, she wants to crawl all over. I don't let her play, I just keep laying her down and saying "no." when she tries to get up again. It is exhausting. I will try to eliminate or shorten her naps, but will have to get the daycare to do it to. Thanks again!

OH gosh, that brings back memories of my first daughter. Every single night, on our bed, just as jolly and happy and ready to play as can be. I wish I had been more firm and known more about what I was doing. We don't have instances like that anymore now that I am "seasoned". Good luck with all of it Smile
