INDIANAPOLIS -- The mother of a girl who
almost drowned in a bathtub last week told
investigators she was watching a
television show in another room and had
forgotten the child was in water, police
said.
Police said Sheila Brooks had left Sirius
Brooks, 3, and her 1-year-old sister in an
upstairs bathtub Thursday night in their
home in the 9300 block of East 42nd
Street.
Sheila Brooks said she initially left the
bathroom to collect some clothes, but she
became distracted by the TV show "American
Idol," watched the program for several
minutes and forgot about the girls,
according to police.
Police said the woman eventually
remembered and asked her 7-year-old
daughter to check on the girls. The
7-year-old found Sirius under the
bathwater and unresponsive, police said.
Sirius was taken to Methodist Hospital,
where she was listed in critical condition
Monday with acute respiratory failure.
No charges have been filed in the case.
Earlier Monday, TheIndyChannel.com
incorrectly reported that Brooks had been
charged.

Are you serious? Forget the tv
show why would she leave the room to begin
with and her children were still in the
tub? I don't leave Chu in the tub
unattended for any reason. Not even to
turn around and grab a bar of soap. I set
everything up before hand or if I do
forget something I take him out of the tub
and take him with me. To do anything else
is just asking for trouble.

Forgot about her kids?? Why kind of
mother forgets her kids? At the ages of 1
and 3, they are too young to be left
unattended, especially in the bathtub!
What was she thinking!!???

Unfit to be a mother. I could never leave
my son unattended in the bath over some tv

if i forget something, i let william have
his bath, then i take him out and get it
together. 1 and 3 is too young of an age
to do that. it just disgusts me that
someone can do that...and for a television
show!

laziness, ignorance and irresponsibility
are a deadly combo. i bet she still has
people feeling sorry for her right now
though. i'm surprised the 1 year old was
okay. this is so sad.

Even if no charges were filed
against her, I HOPE she is having to go to
parenting classes and CPS is involved with
teaching her how to be a PARENT.

Please tell everybody you know NOT to
leave their young children unattended in
the tub! And please note that the child
that almost drowned was the 3 year
old, not the 1 year old! Even at 3,
accidents can happen quite easily! Never
ever ever leave your child(ren) by
themselves in the bathtub!

unfortunately some people do think it's ok
to leave toddlers unattended in the tub.
you should post this in the bath topic in
parenting debate.

She is 25 with 5 children, she needs birth
control to go along with those parenting
classes.
