MS and Other Neurological Symptoms
Posted: 08-28-08 12:49pm

I am working on making an appointment with a neurologist soon and I want to ask if i should ask my doctor about the posibility if Multiple Sclerosis. Also, I would like some insight on what other disorders could possibly mimick MS, i dont want to look like a fool when i go to the doctor and mention ms.

Ill start with my symptoms. This has gotten worse over the past two years. The most recurrent symptom is in my legs. They twitch ALL the time and it feels wierd, sometimes its painful other times not. Also sometimes my left leg goes numb for a minute and usually its fine but the past two times it has happened it came on so suddenly that i fell and I couldnt even walk. Right under my eye, in my cheeck, i get a twitch sometimes that last any where from a couple hours to a couple days. Today my left leg went really numb and it felt like little pins just barely pricking me and after the numbness went away my leg now just hurts on my thigh and my knee. i couldnt move my leg for about two minutes after the tingling stopped. Another thing that really bothers me is when im holding somehting, wether it be a piece of paper of the coffee pot (my boyfriend laughs at me because of this) my hands shake really bad. Could this be tremors?? I do have the blurry vision but ive always had bad eye sight but it has gotten worse over the past two years i have had to change my glasses twice and it doesnt really help. the main thing i am worried about and this is the main reason i think it could be something really wrong is back in june i had a grand mal seizure. I have had complex partial seizures before but i was never diagnosed with epilepsy. lately i cant seem to get enough rest no matter how much i sleep. i dont know if this has to do with anything but i seem to be really sinsitive to heat, just being outside doing nothing my face turns bright red. really strange. also i get little jerks in my arms and legs every once in a while

I am 21 years old female and neurological disorders run in my family. no clue if any one in my family has had ms. please help with questions and please tell me what all this could be if it is not MS. thanks so much

This is great that you are planning on making an appt to see a neurologist. Please follow through.

With the symptoms that you have described, a good neuro would also consider MS as well as any other disease that could cause these symptoms as well. He / she will do a complete workup...blood, personal and family history of known diseases and an MRI (with and without contrast), etc.

When you meet with your neuro...do NOT leave anything out, no matter how silly it seems to you...or something so private that you do not want to share (like loss of bladder control). Everything must be on the table for accurate tests to be performed and eventually a dx.

Partial list of other Auto Immune Diseases that mimic MS symptoms: Lupus, Sjogren's Syndrome, Myasthenia Gravis, Lyme Disease, Vitamin B-12 deficiency, Muscular Dystrophy, ALS or Lou Gehigs Disease, hypo-thyrodism, etc....

I have personal experience with MS (me) and I am very familiar with all the tests, waiting, fustration, other possibilities, etc.... As long as you have a neuro and you are comfortable discussing anything with him / her and he / she with you...consider yourself in good hands.

Me too, I am very sensitive to heat...my legs fail me if I get overheated however once I cool down, I'm good to go...minor twitches as well. Never had a gran mal seizure.

Best wishes and may you find the answer to which you seek.
