ever since i was little i have gotten ear
infections but they were never bad until
this year (2008) when i had 5 bad ear
infections. about 3 days ago my left ear
started hurting on the inside more than i
can possibly imagine it was the worst pain
i have ever experianced.i tried to blow it
off but it has not stopped hurting any
less not even for a second. all the
doctors i went to this past yeart have
told me i've had a lot of drainage in my
ear but never focused on it. they would
all just give me anti biotics and send me
home. but i'm really getting worried i can
barely turn my head without it hurting
even worse. i really need an answer one
doctor told me i might have to get tubes
put in to get the drainage out but never
said anything more even when i came back
the next month for yet another ear
infection. please reply.

Antibiotics might keep an infection at
bay, but staying on them for long periods
of time or going on them too frequently
will cause other health problems. It does
seem that your ears are not draining
properly: many children have problems with
this and have tubes inserted. Sometimes
the ear can be trained to grow properly
with the tube in place, but I'm not sure
if it is too late for you to not have one
inserted permanently.
Your ear can hurt because of an infection,
but fluid buildup which is also not
infected can cause you pain, and an
antibiotic isn't going to take care of
that. If you are allergic to something in
your area, perhaps some sort of allergy
medication would keep the fluid down.
That would be a good thing to try before
you do something more expensive and
permanent than tubes.
I suggest that you go to an ENT (ear nose
and throat doctor) and he will be able to
tell you the best thing to do.
