naurological and vascular symptoms Posted: 05-15-08 00:27am
I have been living with TMJ for about 2
years i guess. It started out
neurological and vascular. Parts would go
numb and cold and i would get really dizzy
and almost lose consciousness. I am
blessed it is not that bad anymore. But my
jaw/neck and back hurt all the time now.
Plus the worst is being woosey and the
spasms of my head muscles. Enough to
almost knock me out. Last night i woke up
feeling horrible. Feeling like a vein was
being compressed. My whole musclular
system is just messed up and i am just at
the end of my rope. I have a baby boy
coming in a few weeks and don't know if
nerves can take my wife going into labor.
i've tried everything from chiro and neuro
doctor. None help. Maybe i'll go to a
oral surgeon as a last resort. I'd have
surgery tonight if i knew it would help
and i'd get my life back. Well, i just
needed to vent somewhere people were going
through the same. I hate complaining to
my wife or family its such a drag.

Yes, it is a drag - have you seen a
sdoctor? What are your symptoms - do you
have under jaw pain or pain behind the jaw
up under the ear? I find that if I keep
stretched out it seems to help - also
sleeping flat on my back w/ a rolled up
towel helps. I get shihatsu massage and he
works on the chest muscles and under the
arm for the anterior neck muscle s- it
seems to help...

Yes, i've seen tons of doctors. A vascular
doc,a primary and 1 neurodentist who
charged me $250 just to evaluate. He then
wanted $5000 for treament plan that was
not guaranteed to work. He said the bone
probably never would go back in place all
the way. The chiro has gotten the jaw to
track pretty straight again. I think it
all started when i had an upper back tooth
pulled. My bite became off and life
became hell. Thats my theory although no
doc will say for sure. Yes, i do get the
pain under chin too. My neck muscles on
that side feel 30% bigger than the other
side. I have a ridge on my head which i'm
told is a muscle too. It grew because it
was in use although it should'nt be that
in use. I likes to spasm too. Along with
my pec muscle spasm and arm numbness time
to time. Rib pain at times too.

I was wondering if you've tried
chiropractic and massage therapy?

Sometimes there just isn't a "cure" to
certain medical problems. TMJ, sadly, is
repeatedly one of those problems. Often,
the TMJ sufferer must learn how to manage
their problem (of course, with a smile on
our face and no grumbling).
One day, we will feel great... like we
never had a TMJ problem... and the next
day - WHAM! Frequently our symptoms don't
even suggest the possibility that a tiny
little joint in the head could be causing
all these problems and pain throughout the
body (i.e., eyes sensitive to light). We
are very good at confounding doctors. And
doctors don't like to be confounded.
To play the devil's advocate here (and I
so hate the devil) - you would pay $5,000,
plus, to have surgery that can not
guarantee a cure, but you are hesitant to
pay $5,000 to go thru a neuromuscular
program that has been known to help others
but obviously cannot guarantee that it
will help you. I understand this
hesitation, but if I were younger and in
the pain I used to be in, I would figure
out a way to try this program.
FIRST - go to another neuromuscular
dentist or two and get their opinions
also. Educate yourself... almost to the
point of being a TMJ specialist yourself.
Try every self-help method you can. Go to
massage therapy REGULARLY (weekly or
bi-weekly, make sure the therapist is a
good one... if she/he not helping... try
another one, etc.) Pain management.
Posture. REDUCE THE STRESS. The list is
endless.
Now, focus on your wife and the upcoming
beautiful experience about to come your
way. Congratulations and count your
blessings. And I do hope and pray that
you will find the help you need.
God bless you,
Carol
P.S. There is no "instant gratification"
when it comes to treating TMJ usually. Be
patient, take one step at a time, reduce
the stress.
